Question Clive may know how much petrol should my volvo 2000 engine burn it rarely goes over 1100 rpm .I've had a few minor probs it's using about 15 quids worth of petrol in a 8 mile sail is this any thing like , it's only ticking over.

Going back over this, google tells me a gallon of petrol is £5.36, so you are burning, assuming 3 mph average speed, about one gallon per hour give or take, your numbers being £15 of petrol for 8 miles at low revs and assuming 3 mph. You may not switch off in locks either?
Not entirely sure that is extravagant for a 2 litre engine. If I drive my 2 litre MPV here in Thailand at slow speed for one hour it will burn a whole lot more! How do I know? Bangkok traffic is world famous, equalled only by Manila in the Philippines and I have driven my cars in both cities in both countries. Often a fast tick-over and crawling for hours on end is the norm. I know cars are not boats but engines are the same in whatever situation they are working.

It's a volvo penta inboard 2000cc manufacturer around 1980 I'm only doing canal cruising sometimes u can walk faster than the speed I go.
I've not looked at the plugs yet I'll have a look at week end.it could be me expecting more it just seems very thirsty.

What actual model is the engine? I thought the VP 2000 series engines were diesel or am I thinking of the wrong engine?

I'm not familiar with the engine, is it a 20hp outboard, a 2 litre inboard or what.
A 20hp 2-stroke might consume around 2 gallons/hr at WOT *Wide Open Throttle), a 4 stroke considerable less.
My most recent experience with outboards was a Suzuki 40hp 2 stroke which used around 4 gallons driving a speed boat for 33 miles at about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle which equated to around 1 1/2 hrs driving in lumpy water.
My 28hp Suzuki 2-stroke will do around 15 miles per gallon average on an 8-man inflatable at sea in anything from a troll to WOT usage over a 3 hour period.
I had a Ford 1600cc crossflow on a 20ft Norman years ago that did about 1 - 2 gallons per hour at sea dependant on speed.
All my other boats have been diesel and they use "Oh my word" all really!
Distance is relative on a boat, tide and current mean the numbers are meaningless, you need to be looking at quantity per hour running. As a rough guide for comparison, how much petrol would a comparable car engine use in an hour at 1100 rpm? 1 gallon? 1.5 gallon? That costs what in the UK these days? Sorry I can't be more help.

That seems a lot to me, I recon your carb needs looking at, what colour are the plugs?
