HOW DO YOU LUBRICATE THE STERING SISTEM ON A NORMAN 23 gears behind the weel and cable down to the motor in fact all of it please ? |

Been there done that! Seized solid on second day of a 2 week holiday, luckily moored outside a pub with wifi and knew the guy that lives next door who lent us his car to get the bits with(asap supplies was only 10 miles away), £250 later and full helm gear and cable with new bracketry and we were back on our way.
If the cable is worn the chances are the helm gear is also worn and will soon ruin a new cable.

Take off wheel and undo screws retaining rack in your toilet. Dependant on what type of rack you have, the original Norman straight one or the Teleflex Morse half circle you can either withdraw the rack and introduce grease into it and dribble oil down the cable (straight rack) or open the half-circle one removed the toothed wheel and the spiral cable, and draw it back down the outer from the outboard end and re-fit is with the spiral filled with grease. Reassemble the rack with plenty of grease too.
However, if your steering is stiff then I suspect another problem. If your outer plastic casing cover is all split and moisture has got in then you are looking at a failure sooner or later and if the reason for wanting to lubricate is excessive stiffness and it is not caused by a seized outboard pivot tube then you might need to change the cable. Corrosion caused by outer case damage is what often causes stiff steering and sooner or later it will fail.
The spiral wire is less than 1/2 mm thick and the heavy duty ones have a Bowden cable centre. The wires on this breaks a few strands at a time and it is they that also render the entire steering cable stiff as they jam the inner against the outer.
Expensive to replace, and probably best to buy the entire steering and refit the ends and your wheel. The alternative it to do it when you are away on holiday by which time your holiday is ruined.
