Ordered 2 new windscreen windows for my 27.Quite happy price wise, about £34 quid delivered and i wanted them slightly oversize. Then the fun started trying to undo the old grub screws that hold the glass in the frames, 32 in no. had to drill the lot out resulting in needing new corner angle bkt's. When i sort out some new bkt's I am going to use silicone sealant to bed the new perspex into the frames as the old rubber is a bit perished. Thing is i thought they were the original windows they were so badly marked but the grub screws were a mix of slot head and cross head,???. One tip for newbies. A 5 inch grinder with a slitting disc cuts the windows to size clean as a whistle. Curves an all.

On line mate. Just google clear perspex cut to size and you will get a raft of websites to choose from. Pick your size and thickness, 5 mm thick is ok and instead of taking your old ones out to measure just measure the whole ali frame around it, ie oversize. When you get the old one out plonk it on top and mark round. A 1mm slitting disc in a 5 inch grinder cut's them as clean as a whistle. Drilling wiper holes is also easy. Start small and build the hole up. My 2 windows for a Norman 27 were approx £34 delivered in 5 day's. Regard's.

I do like the angled nut and bolt idea mate, bit late for me this time as i have made new angles with the stupid little grub screws again. To use toughened glass is a no go for me as the shape is anything but rectangular and must be cut to shape.My car does have proper glass as it does 130 mph. Guy Martin goes round the Isle of Man tt in about 17 mins with a perspex screen and a perspex visor. I suppose the moral is whatever suits you best.

Having replaced the the entire scratched and crazed windscreen on my 20,may I add a couple of observations.
The old screen was held in with a mixture of silicone [bath edge type],and some other type of sealer.I had to break the perspex and pull it out in pieces,and with a sharp screwdriver,remove the sealer.Most of it pulled out in strips.The corner pieces were knackered,so these were dispensed with and instead the frame corners were drilled at an angle,and a small diameter nut and bolt inserted,excess thread cut off.The 4mm perspex[5mm would have been better] I bedded with black Stixall,and some other sealer called The Works.When it needs replacing,it should be quite easy to again break the perspex and unscrew the corners.I don't think this will be very long because of all the overhanging branches and bushes on my local canal, |

The screens on my 22 widebeam are all glass they have been there since 1981 polish up lovely would you put plastic in your car's windscreen forgot to mention it's all toughed glass.

Long odds reduction Jud. Silicone is used in space , in Submarines and in Super Yachts to seal things. end of. Before Rubber the world used tar string or tallow to seal joints . Bit like Osmosis the only cancer that has never sunk a boat but has kept thousands of people employed searching for it.In my honest opinion the only thing you should not put on a boat is a Pessimist.

I'm glad I didn't have glass in my 23's windscreen when I hit that low bridge on the way back from Stourport last August!

I am sorry mate but the last thing i need in a 4 knot average speed canal boat is glass of any kind for a windscreen. have you ever heard of a plane from a spitfire to a jumbo with a glass windscreen. As for going yellow i'll have to take your word for that. Mine after 40 yrs was scratched badly, crazed in places but yellow no.

Are u sure you wan to use perspex it scratches very easy it can also turn yellow it's posible you won't be able see through them after a while I'd use toughed or laminated glass

A good comment mate on both counts, thing is though on my particular boat the aluminium edge trim is 20mm wide all round so rough edges are hidden from view. I know i'm chancing it with the silicone and maybe come a cropper, AND my get out plan lol might not win any boat show awards. If i,m unlucky and need another perspex window i can cut the old one out leaving 10 mm ish of the old window all round the rectangle. Then glue a 3 mm cut to size panel front and back. Maybe the first double glazed Norman. Ps Tom Hanks got Apollo 11 home with a roll of masking tape so my idea is cutting edge

I've used cutting disks before and had a near perfect weld behind the bit I was cutting, couldn't do it if I tried and had to go back and cut again.
I usually tend to cut slightly away from the line and take it back with a 60 grit sanding disk so any cracks that appear on the cut edge can be taken out.
I'd use new rubbers as if you have a breakage they will be a right git to get out again.
