Hi all. We are thinking about having some refurb work doing on our "23". We want a new bi-fold stable door from the cockpit to the cabin, a new door on the toilet compartment. New cushions and covers throughout, and curtains and tracks/rails. Also the previous owners lined the whole of the interior with foam backed cord carpet. The foam back has disintegrated and the lining is sagging in parts quite bad, so we want that all off and re-lining. We also want the side aluminium windows removing, refurbishing and refitting. Plus curtains and tracks throughout. Also the cabin deck has fittings for a table which we don't have and the deck is quite uneven so we want a new deck fitting and carpeting. We'd like the 12v electrics tidying up and a new fuse panel. We've been in touch with two local boatyards on the Leeds Liverpool and they only do steel hull narrow boats. Does anyone have any numbers or contacts of anyone that could help us out. We are moored at White Bear Marina, in Adlington. Many thanks in advance..... Mark and Jackie.

I have 3 other Normans in that condition. If I suggested taking one of them out to my other half. It would be divorce and we don't even live together. |

With my last boat the first sea trip (50 nautical miles with no boltholes, not a minor hop) was done with polythene taped over the cabin windows to keep the leaks at bay and a bare frame for cockpit fitout with lots of bungees keeping the locker contents in check.
The previous boat did several trip up the river to a pub with the aft cabin cut off and a tarpaulin heaped on the side at the marina.
If the engine runs and the hull floats you can always use a boat, a half built project moored beside a riverside pub is worth more than a near completed project that has not moved in years.
If it floats enjoy it when you can and it will inspire you to get the jobs done, so many sit in marinas abandoned after someone has got fed up with it and walked away part way through.

I will say that refurbishing my 32 was well worth it because the work is to my high specification.
I am hoping to use it a lot this year. Starting on the Llangollen and just cruising. I will post updates so If any one wants to come aboard and see it they are welcome. |

Thanks Knighty,I know what you mean.What I should have said is,a boat that needs nothing doing that will stop you using it.
It is now February,and in a couple of months,I want to be off enjoying the boat,[thats only 8 weeks or so],therefore I am making a list of essential jobs that will prevent use,so the leaky windows can wait,[I have a "farmyard engineering "fix ] in place to prevent drips on my new carpeting,and the hull and upper structure painting can also wait. I will concentrate on the engine,when I work out how to remove it with the boat still in the water. |

I have to agree with Stratford.I am in the middle of refurbing a Norman 20,which when I first looked at it,seemed to require a bit of TLC.Having now replaced the wind screen perspex,[a swine of a job] relined the cabin and hull,[an even worse swine of a job],trying to fix the remote which keeps falling off,looking forward with dread to removing the leaky cabin windows,trying to make sense of the rat's nest wiring and a dozen or more small time consuming jobs that need doing.I havn't even looked at the engine properly yet.
Looking back,I would gladly have paid 2 or 3 thousand pounds more to buy a boat that needed nothing doing to it! |

Break down the work to the tradesman you need, carpenter for the woodwork, auto electrician for the electric, carpet fitter and upholsterer etc. It will work out far far cheaper then plonking the boat with a marina / boatbuilder if you can find one to take it on. As mentioned for the amount of work you want doing in their hands it will far far outweigh the boat value. |

Buy a new boat it might be cheaper. I totally refurbished my 32 and if I counted my time I could have probably bought a new boat. |
