I have purchased a 18ft Norman and i would like to paint it, what paint is best? can i use polyurethane bought from B@Q,or any large diy shop?

The best thing is not to paint it....... I would take slightly imperfect GRP over any kind of paint system .... anyday.
Its quite amazing what can be done to even the worst gel coat with the correct tools.
Once you paint.... you have got to keep painting.

You should use an epoxy type paint - 2-part polyurethane is best. It is very expensive and has noxious vapours and you need to use it in well ventilated conditions. Buying from a boatyard is cripplingly expensive, but you need marine quality or it will fall off.
Brewers used to sell me the paint very reasonably priced in 2.5 litre and 5 litre quantities (two tins of paint and hardener/activator combining to the total quantity. They still deal with Bradite but would probably have to order the marine one for you.

You'd need Bradite 2-pack gloss paint PG77 plus activator and about equal quantities of TP33 thinner.
