Hi all,
Been awhile since I posted. Having got the boat back in the water I have found the idle speed varies when the throttle lever is rocked from side to side. I suspect there is some wear on the throttle shaft or a seal issue can anyone advise.

Dave you aren't kidding about fuel. The front seal was in two pieces! The rest were very soft and once the rear seals were replaced the pump was harder to turn once by hand. Just need to get it checked and then back onto the boat.

The bio content of modern diesel attacks ISO7840 hose as well, good eh!
There's been quite a few runaway diesel engines on older marine diesels as leaking fuel pumps fill the sump with diesel, once getting past the rings they will rev unrestricted till the fuel supply runs out and easily destroy the engine, you try to stall a boat engine at revs.....
When I check my oil levels it's more to see if it's gone up than down.
A spare co2 fire extinguisher is a good thing to carry as it's the safest way to stop a runaway with least damage, blast in into the air filter (or in most cases on old bmc/perkins the hole where the air filter should be).

We had our BSS yesterday and had to replace a perfectly good braided fuel hose with a newer rubber one that is inferior but that has the all-important BS/ISO number printed on it. The world really has gone mad.

I read that somewhere else. Great how improvements one way cause older things to fail!

If you are going to change seals make sure you get the newer viton type as modern diesel is bad for killing older seals and o rings.

I had a suspicion that it was worn. Not sure if I should get a new one or see if I can find someone who can machine a bush for the throttle.
Being the practical sort I was considering buying a seal kit and having a go at refurbishing the pump, I do have a friend has the equipment to test it afterwards.

If it's the same pump I had on my pugs the top cover where the throttle lever is prone to wear, one of mine was quite bad so I machined out and turned a bush to fit, fitted with heat interference and a touch of loctite and was fine, you probably get a bit of a leak around it too.

Only answer have it serviced or find another one. But a second hand one could be worse.
