Posted - 14 Apr 2016 : 22:13:53 Can anyone tell me what the lowest hp engine would be suitable as a secondary, backup outboard for my Norman 20?
I have a Honda 7.5hp, four stroke which weighs a ton which I think I'll sell and get something else. I have an Evinrude 2hp but think this will be too small albeit on Windermere lake. |

Posted - 17 Apr 2016 : 08:58:23 You know the 2hp evinrude I have which I mentioned in my first post? It's actually a 4hp. I saw the 2 (which is 2 stroke) on the top cowling and never noticed the 4hp on the back.
now, just how long can I claim to be a novice? |

Yeah, the key was "along the shoreline". It's a rare day on that lake when there is not enough wind to blow you into the shallows.
It's almost as if you are being deliberately obtuse, Dave. |

Posted - 15 Apr 2016 : 19:11:02 Do you really need a backup on Windermere? In the unlikely event of a breakdown you are going to be safe and would most likely be able to get a tow from another boat or just drift into shore, tie up and phone someone for help.
Just make sure you have a pole long enough for punting along a shoreline and maybe a paddle if you are feeling energetic. |

Posted - 14 Apr 2016 : 22:45:24 I would have thought that a 2hp would probably manage to push you home... slowly. Why not try it and see how well to works, or doesn't.... There is no current on a lake..... but I know from experience that the word "wind" appears in the name Windermere for a reason. You may not make much headway into a big blow.
A lot depends on what you expect it to be able to do.
