Hi We are now getting to the stage of putting the roof lining back up, which brings us to lighting. I am thinking of leds. so I thought i would ask you other fellow boaters what you have on your boat and your thoughts on how many in a cabin. thanks Geoff smith. white fox

The 12 v strip lights are part of the charm of the lovely old Norman - warm, cosy and utterly unique. Best Wishes,
Florian

Hi Folk's I decided in the end to fit ten recessed led's into the roof lining. This as worked out fine, I like the led strip idea and may think of this in the bedroom. I you google norman 29 white fox you will see a stage by stage of the rebuild so far.

just solder wire onto the little copper pads.
thats how i replaced a 12" strip-light in my boat, 3 X 12" strips of LEDs with wire soldered between them works a treat, uses less power and is much brighter win, win, win

Hi,
When I fitted my lights I used the full 5m roll in one piece, making one continuous downlight with just the 2 wires into the switch panel. If I'd cut the roll in half how would I use the half that didn't have the wires (solder, special connectors or bin)?
Jud.
p.s. Thanks for the cooker, Jimbo, it works a treat

Many thanks for your advice.

Under the old 12v light whichever type will be two wires normlly 1 red and 1 black, on the end of the led strip are two wires 1 red and 1 black. Buy a simple 12v rocker switch £ 1.79 on e bay and put them in from both ends as in a connection block. Press for on and press for off. If you want to shorten the led strip cut between the little brass squares spread along the strip.

How do you wire these up after you have cut to the required length. Is it simply soldering the +ve wire to one side of the LED and the -ve to the other. Or do you need special connectors?

Hi.
I took all of my old light fittings and wiring off my '23 due to power issues.I replaced them by fixing 10mm plastic trunking (£2.65) around the ceiling perimeter, then sticking the led's (on a 5m roll £3.99) inside that. It worked for us, as now we have downlights that don't cast shadows inside the boat and we light up a tunnel with the curtains open.
Jud.
(I like cheap and easy)

Hi Guys
I have just upgraded two old 12v caravan fluorescent fittings by removing the tube holders and the circuit boards that go with them and replaced the internals with 3 self adhesive strips of LEDs bought on Ebay for £6 for 5 metre length on a roll.
you can cut this to length and stick it inside the casing and I had enough left to light the bow of my boat inside as well.
best of luck with your project

Hi it would be best to change to led lights because they use less power which is better for your batteries

Glad you asked this White Fox. I'm agonising whether or not to replace the old 25W tubes in the plastic covers but I guess it makes total sense if they're going to solar?
I've been ogling solar on Bimble recently and they have a selection.

Cheers
