Hello,
Just thinking about engine failure and drifting into reeds - I'm on the southern Broads - very quiet - What's your advice about punting out of trouble - Should I carry a punting pole, buy an electric trolling engine (Norman 23) or is there a river recovery service anyone could recommend?
Best Wishes,
Florian.

hi, we ran out of fuel (stupid i know) on the river aire between knottingley and castleford, was a bit scary but after that i bought one of those electric motors, a 55lb thrust one it pushes the N23 along doesn't break any speed records but would get us to safety..oh and put a couple of paddles/oars on board to just to get us to the bank

We got a 42'er wih an overheated engine to Cantley using wind, tide and the pole, downriver from after Brundall but still a few miles to safety.
Night was coming in fast as well.
That was an education! Enjoyed it tho'.

You dial 999. And ask for the coastguard and they will send someone out

I have a spare 4hp mercury 2 stroke stored on the boat I use. I had an old seagull that got me through a breakdown and back to my mooring ok.

Thankyou both for your replies - You are right, when the engine stops the reeds suddenly sound uninviting. I have an old outboard which I could use as a spare but I thought maybe something smaller, less smelly under the floorboards and using a different fuel supply - an electric trolling motor, might do the same job of gliding me slowly back to the lights and friendly noise of a Broadland village. I shall look into the rescue service too!
Many thanks,
Florian.

Why not invest in a folding motor bracket, bolt it to the transom with a bit of ply inside, and get a cheapo 3-4 hp outboard you can keep under the floorboards? After all, you are pretty much on a no-win if you lose your engine, with so much of the Broads and river side banks being across acres of deep gooey mud with 50 metre band of reeds you aren't walking out are you? Unlike a canal with a tow-path you aren't bow hauling-home either because conditions just don't suit that.

Get a spare engine - even on a 23 a 3-4hp will push albeit slowly. You'll get somewhere civilised eventually.

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!
