That depends on your idea of sea worthy.

Only sailing boats need keels. Power boats go straight due to the engine pushing them in a straight line.

The ride very much depends on the sea state and the speed. A small Norman will plane well with a big engine on the back so will skim across the surface of the sea. A thrilling and possibly slightly damp ride. Rather like ridding a large motorcycle. Don't be under the illusion that you will be able to stroll around and enjoy a glass of wine..... Holding on tight will be the key!!!

As the sea state increases it will become too rough to plane and shortly after that it becomes very dangerous to be at sea in a small boat. Only possible on calm days.

Going to sea in a small and powerful boat requires good knowledge and understanding of weather, tides, the limitations of the boat and you. Also a sound knowledge of the local area. Get it wrong and at best you will get a lift home from the RNLI..........
For everyones sake... you MUST have life jackets... real ones not buoyancy aids. A VHF radio, Some form of navigation equipment like a chart and compass, probably a GPS.

I've set out to sea in my boat and had to turn back as we were unable to stay in our seats!!! The sea was confused and we were struggling to make sensible progress. It was like trying to walk around whilst on a roller coaster...... We set off again on the next tide, 6 hours later and we did the trip around the Norfolk coast, on the plane with unspilt coffee cups on the dash...... walking round the decks taking photos...... what a difference 6 hours makes.

btw...... my boat is a bit bigger than andyx's and has slightly more power. It may be more sea worthy, but even so we can't go out in anything much above a force 5-6 wind.

Thankyou for that - I found that very informative Deano. One thing occurs - how is a Norman with no keel and hardly any draft, seaworthy?
Doesn't the wind just push it sideways without a keel? Big ebgine pushing it though...but even so, Isn't it a rough ride?
Interested,
Best Wishes,
Florian

OK.
Glass reinforced plastic is known as GRP. That is made up of strands of glass, encompassed in polyester resin.
This does not give a great finish on the outside, so a high gloss, none reinforced polyester resin is used as the outer layer.

With it so far? So simple answer is gel coat is simply a polyester resin.

When making a boat, the gel coat is the first layer applied to the inside of the mould, this produces the top coat when the boat is removed from the mould. This is the hard gloss surface you see.

A strange property of gel coat is that is only fully cures in the absence of air. This is fine when it is in a mould because the mould itself and the regular polyester resin prevent contact with air and it sets hard.

An alternative use is 'flow coat'. This is gel coat with wax in styrene added. The wax floats to the top surface and shields the air so it sets. The wax can then be polished off.
Flow coat can be painted or rolled on. It is not simple to create a good quality finish by hand. It is often used on the 'wrong' side of GRP to create a better finish than the strand mat and regular resin.

Regular polyester resin is sometimes known as "Resin A" Gel is sometimes known as "Resin B"

Hope that helps....

The enfield 130 is claimed to be rated at 130hp but it realy rated to a torque figure so 90hp is the practical maximum on a diesel engine and a bit more on a petrol.
If hanging a big motor on the transom check the infill wood as they get wet and rot leaving a near hollow shell to clamp on and push againgst, which is gonna get very wet when you open the throttle up.

Keep the water on the outside and the beer on the inside!
