Posted - 11 Mar 2015 : 13:40:55 Hi everyone.
Well we have taken the plunge and bought a boat, Not a small one you might think would be the sensible thing to do, No, it's a dirty great Norman 29 Wide Beam, than needs 'A Lot' of tidying up as she's been a little neglected over the years lets say.
So just thought I say hello, and was wondering if any of you Seasoned' captains out there could offer any advice or tips for this 'Trepidatious' newbie..
Cheers.

Not forgetting the RNLI 'experience"!!

There used to be a picture of me as a Sea Scout on Ripon MBC website... no idea why... I have never been near the place!!!!

Posted - 12 Mar 2015 : 18:51:53 I don't suppose the pair of perkies will ever make it fast but should be ok for reliable plodding on the salty stuff when you get bored of the inland bits, I have a pair of peugeot diesels kicking out similar power on enfields and anything over 8 knots is just pushing a wave and wasting diesel, 6-7 knots is comfy/economic. While it's out of the water check the outdrive gaiters and replace if looking other than newish, much better than having them split in use, Bob Knowles is the bloke for spares for them. Boroughbridge is the furthest north I've been in mine, RMBC do an excellent guide for the ouse & trent with lots of useful info in. As for needing tlc, don't go pulling it apart at this time of the year, get it useable and get out on it before to much re-fitting as you'll find lots of bits you'd do differently with experience, get the experience first and save doing jobs twice, my first season with Leo had me doing sea trips with polythene taped over the leaky windows and bare timber framework as the cockpit fitout.

Posted - 12 Mar 2015 : 16:14:44 Thanks Deano and DF..
I've watched loads of you tube vids on boat cleaning and restoration with all sorts of products including the 3M range, all claiming to be 'The Best' especial by Americans LOL..
Funny you should advise the use of a polisher, I've got my eye on a few on ebay at the moment, no way am I going to restore her without some help..
DF - the setup is two Perkins 4107 with enfield outdrives, it's having a new prop and gear cables fitted as we speak as these; amongst a few other things, were pointed out with the pre purchase survey.
We have recently become members of the Ripon Motor Boat Club RMBC and our fatty 29 is currently moored at Boroughbridge 'North Yorkshire', she's called De-Stressing, although I was almost going to take off the 'De' at one point.
I'm loving the B.O.A.T anagram - that is going to be so true in my case as she is in need of some love lets just say.

Posted - 11 Mar 2015 : 17:57:19 3M Restorer on a polishing mop..... by hand is hard work. Don't waste money on a cheepo 12V car buffer. Get a Silverline polisher sander. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/161382171317?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0
The 3M products always come out well on test. Folowup with their paste wax. Its worth the cost.

Posted - 11 Mar 2015 : 14:57:24 Hi Knighty.
LOL... Yeah I've been told to expect that..
Cheers, if it wasn't for being a member of a lovely club where everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable I'd be a lot more anxious I can tell you.
It needs a good wash and polish, in fact that's something people might be able to advise me on, what product(s) to use to get it back to life, the gel coat is VERY faded and chalky. Inside isn't too bad, open plan which kind of helps with the refurb I guess, just a matter of taste really.
Mechanically sound (so far) still to complete survey and test drive, oh I'd better just say that we've not actually paid for her yet, so I guess saying we've bought her isn't quite correct. It's all looking good, but if the test shows signs of serious mechanical issues, then I guess I'll be re-posting saying 'We almost bought a boat'...

Posted - 11 Mar 2015 : 14:17:52 Hi and welcome, 29ft wide beam, wow that the way to start
All i would say is get the boat river worthy and enjoy being out on the water to start with, then as you learn the ropes so to speak you will get to know what you want out of the boat and empty your pockets accordingly |
