Hi all me again looking for advice please. My 27 has a Honda 15 outboard with a fairly recent service and sounds perfect when running. Started first time today with a little choke and using the single lever I ran it for 20 mins then switched off. Turned the key 2 mins later wont start although the starter turns a couple of times. Im not sure I am putting the remote lever into neutral. Do I push and hold the red button in the centre pin of the lever or pull the lever out or push the lever in. Sounds confusing to me and ive just wrote it but the wise amongst you will know what I mean. Have I got the starting procedure wrong or are the battery terminals etc loose. Ps I do vent the fuel tank and prime the bulb. Regards Phil Hunt.

Not available at the moment, but Lidl do a good value trickle charger from time to time, worth watching for.

Solar may be an option too.... but watch out for the cheap ones, they tend not to have a blocking diode, so discharge at night!

Went to the boat and turned the key -- started first time ffs. Switched off turned key cough cough cough. Checked terminals with a multimeter it shows 11.9 or nearly flat. Took battery home put on charge and cooking merrily. My neighbour (AA) man says the symptons sound about right, ie not enough continuous running for the little Honda to keep it charged up. Recommends continuous trickle charger hooked up when in a Marina. I think a lot of you already know and do this. Hopefully this current (how apt) problem is sorted. Thanks for the advice folks, no doubt I will need you again. Regards Phil Hunt

If the lever is in the middle of it's travel it should be in neutral, it might not be fully central as most remotes won't give as much throttle is reverse as it does in forward.

Thanks for the replies folks, I am going to the marina in the morn. Will check the battery terminals, venting, lanyard stop etc but I think the advice about the throttle lever will sort it(fingers crossed), before I thought you pushed the RED centre button to find neutral and not to engage drive. Will report back soon. Cheers Phil Hunt.

Does the starter turn each time you try the key?
If not then look to the battery and connections.

Hi Philihun

Fuel tank must be vented when the engine is running to allow air into the tank to fill the space up that is left as the fuel is used.
Close the vent when you have finished using the engine.

Hope this helps.

Most outboard remotes have a sprung detent in the neutral position that 'clicks' into place automatically in the right spot, the red button would be pressed to get it past and into gear, the small lever will open the throttle only and not control the gear cable.
They also tend to have a switch inside to prevent the starter spinning when in gear so you can only start in neutral, if the starter is spinning that not your problem.
I must add that I've never used a honda remote but assume they follow the same pattern as other makes.
It probably also has a kill switch that may have been activated, they usually have a cover that a lanyard clip can be slid through so the engine stops if you go over the side.
