After a few days of stripping the paint from the outside surfaces of our cabin (roof and sides and deck). The gel coat underneath is very discoloured. We've tried polishing it with T cut and a mild rubbing compound but to no avail. The decision has been made to prepare the surface for a fresh paint job. The question is........ What paint do we use? I've been in touch with the previous owner and he told me he used B+Q exterior gloss. Is this really the best option or are there other more weather resistant options? Any advice is most welcome. Thank you in advance.

Mark Atkinson.

International Paints make a small booklet that has a HUGE amount of valuable information in... get hold of a copy from any good chandlers. It may even be available online.
It is heavily influenced by their own brands of course, but much of the information is generic.

The best and longest lasting paint is 2-pack. It sets by a chemical reaction. It is almost impossible to spray without professional equipment. (It will kill you!) But with care can be applied by quality roller to an exceptional finish. Oddly, it is also the most expensive. 2-Pack CAN NOT be applied over normal paint.

I did the topsides of my old Freeman with International 2-pack and they still look good 10 years on. The hull was done with International Toplac and has had to be refreshed twice... but it covers the scratches well!!!

Preperation is every thing.........the quality of the paint will determine how long it will last before repainting.

Any of the main players in the marine market will be similar.... I'm not sure I would use B&Q paint..... but there are less expensive marine enamels available, other than International and Blakes.
