Hi all

Short of heading down to the mooring with a spirit level, a tape measure and two extra arms, can anyone tell me the air draft of a MkIII N23?

The screen sections have been screwed together with a plate and the hinges look a little rusty to force them to fold, so I want the figure with the screens up.

We cruise the Broads, and have shot Wroxham bridge with the gauges showing 6' 7", but the gauges are different on each side of the bridge, and allow for a fair bit of "hire boat extra margin".

I know I will probably have to actually measure the air draft at some point as we may well have her loaded differently to anyone elses boat, but a good guide would be great.

We are now planning a week on the Northern Broads, so Potter Heigham bridge is the target! Average clearance 6' 6" at HW, but it's a very rounded arch, so maybe 5" less than that 4 feet either side of the centre line.
Therefore, it would be really useful if anyone else has the air draft at the screen corners too.

Get some Plus Gas. It is a million times better than WD40 for freeing rusted items. Even a drop of diesel will be better. Just don't get it on anything important as it stinks forever!

I have been down to the mooring, spirit level in hand, and make the centre of the screen 6' 6", it is maybe only 1/4" or so less than this at the corners, so I'm ignoring that and sticking at 6' 6".

My screen has 2 pretty rusty hinged mounts on either half of the front section, but these have been screwed together in the centre using a folded piece of galvanised sheet - this would come off pretty easily.
I've not looked in detail at the side screens yet.

I'm having new set of remote cables fitted next week, so am planning on soaking the hinges two or three times in WD40 over the next few days, and then I'm gonna have a go at folding them down.

I would agree with the comfortable 6' 8", the 6' 7" at Wroxham was a lucky pass, lined dead right on the centre of the arch and a little speed kept me nice and straight.
I'm not sure I would try again without an extra inch to spare.

I'll keep you posted, and I'll see what I get if I can fold the screen sections down.

on measuring mine I get 5' 1'' to the ledge that the screen sits on
that doesn't leave much + the windshield

I thought the screens on all 23's were fixed unless they have been modified. If Nigel (Woodwose) looks in he may be able to tell you what his boat needs.

Mine needed 6' 8" for me to be confident in taking it through but mine was a Mk 1 with a different screen setup.


Why not pay the pilot the first time and carefully check measurements and clearances??

I have checked out the bridge, and the Pilot was pretty insistent that 6' 6" was a maximum at most low water states.
I think I'm looking at exactly that, so it's really touch and go if we will fit.

Gonna try to WD40 the screen hinges at the weekend and see if I can ease them at all without snapping them off

If anyone does have a good idea of the actual airdraft figures, I would appreciate it.
