hi to everyone out there
just bought our first boat a norman 20 we have called it summat-to-do for that reason
now can I pick your brains I think it should have sliding side windows looking at other 20s but mine has Perspex instead, where can I get replacement glass or complete units. I am moored at moons bridge marina on the Lancaster canal, also I want to replace all the dark wood with a lighter colour any ideas on which wood to buy

I will be at my boat Friday & Saturday so its probably best to call
me to arrange the best time....usually best in the morning.
Sundays are usually a sailing day for us, subject to the weather of course.

The problems I had with getting glass is that the original in my 32 is 5mm toughened so I had to have one made which cost a fortune. Laminated is best if you can fit it with new rubbers. The best way to refit is as follows
What I have done on my 32 is drill out all the pop rivets and bolt straight through the window and trim with 4 mm stainless countersunk socket head bolts. I then cut off the thread that sticks through the nut. Undo the nut and replace it with a dome head nut which is a nicer finish than a normal nut. The brass bolts that hold the window together don,t normally come out so I drilled them out and tapped 4mm and replaced with the 4mm countersunk bolts.

hi thanks for that.I will at the boat at weekend, if its convenient I could pop round sat afternoon or sunday, depending how your fixed and it has the original frames.

Hi,
I am moored further up the canal at Garstang. I completely renovated my 20 recently and this included all the windows, bulk heads etc etc, so if you want me to pop round for a chat, I am happy to do so.
I live in Leyland so it's not a problem. I can share photo's & all my experiences with the windows...tricky, but fun !
Just ask, cos when I was in your position, it would have made my project easier. |

Hi and welcome, if you still have the alloy frames the glass can be replaced but is a case of splitting the frames which usually means drilling corroded fixings and new seals and getting glass cut at a local glaziers etc. If the frames have gone you will struggle to find replacements unless you get someone breaking an old boat.
Have a scan through the sections under Your Normans for ideas of wood colour, my 20 which has original woodwork is a teak type colour. Marine ply is the best choice but comes at a cost. Don't know if you need to go to that expense as original only looks like a laminate veneer. |
