I know this may have been asked before.
What type of battery will I need to run my Norman Conquest with a mariner four stroke 9.9hp outboard.
Is there any difference between a starter and leisure batteries.

We run 2 batteries (1 x75amph & 1 x 110 leisure) thru a multi switch.
We leave both on with 2x 20w panels connected thru a solar controller, the panels are on all the time.
Tho' most panels have a blocking diode, the controller ensures that voltage is correct & so far is doing a good job.
Controller is similar to Merlins & they are available cheaply on Ebay - Check the max wattage (Ours can handle up to 60w of panels)

My panel seems to be working fine.
Adi when you say keep panel connected is that all the time even when running engine, will I need some sort of controller to do this.
At the moment I have only one battery, I will be fitting a second battery soon and they will both be connected via a switch or a relay. |

well that's my battery problems sorted stuck an 80w panel on the fore deck charges at 13volts even when it dull well pleased
first my two batteries have been fully charged all season using
all the usual suspects, fridge, tv, pumps phone chargers ect
during the day the fridge runs straight off the panel
controller on the steering hub

Keep the panel connected !
We recently fitted a 20w panel & control box , followed a week later with another 20w panel - Even with the British weather this has made a massive difference to our charging. Our Honda BF15 will charge at 6amps flat out , this normally keeps the batteries (110 Amp leisure & 75amp starter) ok when we are cruising hard. Recently we have been 'Taking it easy' & have had suffered from low batts - The addition of the solar panels have meant we can cruise less & still enjoy the power draw of the TV/DVD , lights etc without cruising for 6hrs plus.
(Normally we dont have this problem - but this season batts were flat!) The Solar panels will hopefully ensure next season we will start with good batts without the need to remove & charge.

Went up to boat on Sunday haven't started engine since fitting solar panel, turned over and started battery seem to be holding a charge which is good news, went out for about just over an hour which made a change rather then working on her all the time, reconnected solar panel and will wait to see what shes like next week.

Bought a solar panel from maplins,quite a big one on special offer, fitted yesterday wait and see next week if it still as some life in it to start engine. |

Invest in a small solar charger. I found in my first year with the boat I was taking the battery home to recharge as the outboard didn't, charge it enough. My first solar charger was from Maplins like a little brief case cost about 15 pounds and connected to the battery with croc clips and that was enough between outings to top the battery back up. |

Thanks to both of you for the info.
I'm rewiring it at the moment and will run cable for a twin set up ready for next year, but the battery as lost charge twice now when not been used for a couple of weeks so i think it is on its way out. |

On my 20 I have an 85 a/hr numax leisure battery with exactly same out board as you. Fine for me starts her ok and lasts a weekend if the wife goes easy on the stereo
I also have a small solar panel that keeps it topped up. If you intend to do longer trips I would go for a twin set up or a 115 a/hr battery but I was tied for space where my battery fits. |
