Posted - 29 Apr 2013 : 09:41:01 Any advice please. We seem to have developed an annoying niggle with our outboard. At slow/idling speed the engine occasionally cuts out. A turn of the ignition key fires it back up again, but mooring the boat can be quite an experience especially if there are other boats for'd and aft. We were told when we bought the boat in March that the engine was serviced at the end of last year.

Posted - 04 May 2013 : 07:31:35 Hi when I get a moment I will get the bills out to check the exact amount as I remember the engine was a none starter some parts required but I took the engine to the repairer. The second bill was at the mooring some 10 miles away Pete

Not sure what you got for yr £500 !! but to say thats extreme is a understatement (I do know of one boatyard that includes a CDI unit on a Honda service whether its needed or not) but £500 !!!
Even with a lift out (Our yard does this to make it easier to change oil etc - & will let you antifoul whilst out if you can be there at the time. costs are neglible compared to yours !)
Outboard Plugs - Say £15 at a push !!!
Oil - £20 to extreme
Labour - £100 if they are driving a Bentley maybe
Lift out ? £100
still doesnt add up

Posted - 02 May 2013 : 08:38:35 When I had this problem just after a £ 500 service not a happy bunny returned the engine to the repairer another £ 200 bill it happened again . I found the idle jet blocked due to dirty petrol or water .I cleaned all petrol cans, tanks carburettor jet washed and left to dry, when filling the tanks I use Mr Funnel Fuel Filter Funnel. No more problems Pete

Turning up the idle will fix it but is not really the answer !
I suspect its either dirt in the idle jet (A common problem - we have suffered from this a few times) - This requires removing the carb & cleaning out the jet with a airline.
Or... the mixture is a little rich (That is normally the case when motor is hot or hot days) mixture screw needs adjustment - A good starting point is 1 & a half turns out.

Posted - 30 Apr 2013 : 11:43:41 Thanks for those suggestions. I'll check the breather on the fuel tank. The engine is a Suzuki 15hp 4 stroke. I'm not up on outboards so would be a little nervous about tinkering with idle screws etc. Maybe if I had a manual? Any ideas where I can get hold of one?

Posted - 29 Apr 2013 : 15:21:56 my mercury used to do it I screwed the idle screw up a bit idles a bit faster no cutting out, I found it was worse on really hot days,when we had them. |

Posted - 29 Apr 2013 : 12:47:51 One thing worth checking (it worked for me) is the breather screw on your fuel tank. I once had the same problem as you and i found that my breather vent was screwed in, thus preventing air flow into the tank. This caused a restriction to the fuel flow into the carb which affected running at lower revs especially when preparing to moor between other vessels.
Also, when your engine is warm, try letting it idle, if it cuts out try adjusting first, you dont mention what engine you have but in my case (Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke ) i turned the mixture screw all the way in, then released it 2 1/4 turns.You can then adjust the tickover screw accordingly. If that fails you may need to replace a diaphragm or a jet inside the carb |
