Hello All
Looking forward to some spring weather I am planning a trip of about 2 days out and 2 back from our mooring at StNeots on the GtOuse. I have been from there to St Ives before and know once I am past St Neots concrete canyon of a lock it will be a good trip but am tempted to push on towards Bedford to about Gt Barford lock but wonder if it will be a bit bleak just following the A1? Any advice? Is it (as usual) nicer than it appears from the road?

I think that's a good idea - should we be putting stuff into the side bar menu under trip reports? That doesn't seem to have changed since I first registered and I am not sure how easy it is to do that? Not sure I am up to keeping a detailed log but a brief report of trips the community have undertaken would give me something to read when I am at work. Needs to be easy for Trev though.

You'll be lucky, I can't see Trev getting that one together, for distances us canalplan, for pub reccomendations just try them all and go back for a second opinion.
Often local cruising clubs will have an area guide, I had one from rippon motor boat club for trent/ouse/humber and tribs and was worth every penny.

WHEN the new web site launches could a page like this be included that would be helpful to members planning a trip. Could there be a form to keep it simple such as:
Start location
End location
Locks to pass through
water and sanitation and shower facilities points
decent eating drinking establishments
average cruising time and distance between points
small feetext box for comments abouts currents and tides to watch out for.
A bit like the Canal Companion guides.
I'm planning my first trip when we launch our 23 this spring/summer from Nottingham along the trent to Torksy lock, up the Fosse way through Lincoln on Witham and on to Boston and return.
Would be interested in any of the above points I have made and if I am likely to meet any members on route.
Comments please on this idea and the above

Aim to stop around houghton lock as the axe & compass is just a walk across the meadow, 3 horseshoes is just a wander into houghton and 3 jolly butchers has a mooring before the lock, we always used to moor just beside the canoe portage to visit the pubs.
White Hart in st.ives does cracking food at good prices and cafe local does a good brekkie, some good bands to be had at 7 wives and floods tavern, sometimes also in the oliver cromwell on a sunday afternoon.
Stop outside M&Co in the high st. and crouch down, you will find oliver cromwell with his finger up a lions ar5e 
Ferryboat at holywell is average but cheap (if enough water to moor), pike & eel is pricey, can't say about the pubs in earith as I heard the landlord left since last visit, can only be a good thing as he was a dick.
Upstream of st.neots we could rarely be bothered going further than gt.barford as it's lacking in good pubs, at barford take the mile walk into the village as the locals drink in the golden cross, a lot cheaper (although Neil in the anchor is a nice guy but fun seems to be frowned upon)

I did wonder if I would run out of river going up stream so think I will save that for a more usual weekend trip - good to hear Gt Barford is only a few hours.
So will go down stream. I am a very slow boater - frequent stops for a kip or a drink but thats what its all about, so think Ely would be a bit to far as I never got that far when I was based in St Ives. However when I moved the boat last year I got passed my fear of locks so my range has increased a bit now.

as the posts above i would suggest a run down to ely & back some great goba mooring between st ives & ely

From St Neots you will get to Bedford in a day- Gt Barford is only about 2 hours.
I am based at St Neots and for a 2 day out and 2 day back cruise i would suggest going to Ely. |

Hi Clive,
How about the other direction, past St Ives and onto Ely,
We brought our boat down from March last year to Earith where we are moored, it took two days but we did have to catch the tide at Salters Lode and through Denver sluice.
I guess anywhere would be nice if we have some decent weather !

It's a nice run up to Bedford once there you can stay a night in the marina and use the showers and get a meal in the pub. And if you need supplies there's a tesco an short walk from the goba moorings below Bedford.
