Hi
I wonder if anybody can advise me about navigation from March, in Cambridgeshire...? As yet I know nothing at all about the waterways in the Fens, but I'm contemplating buying an 8'6" wide boat in March, and, if it's possible, cruising her back home to Oxford. I realise that, getting nearer home, I would need to take the Grand Union down to London, and up the Thames, as the Oxford Canal would be too narrow. But I'd very much welcome information about the Middle Level waterways, and the River Nene, especially as the (rather large scale) map I'm looking at suggests that the stretch of the Nene joining the Grand Union is narrow...

Also, I'm wondering if those waterways suffer from the closures for maintenance that is currently afflicting the Thames. My home mooring wouldn't be accessible from either direction until March 2013,because of lock closures for repair work...

Please excuse my ignorance! Thanks for any info....

Middle level maps here: http://www.middlelevel.gov.uk/map.aspx

With 8'6" beam you're going by road my friend, or else sailing down the North Sea Coast and coming up the Thames Estuary and thence the navigation up to Oxford.

Assuming you survive the trip it will cost an awful lot in fuel so better to give Tony Tugboats a call. Here: http://www.tonytugboats.com/

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!

Stewart

Unfortunately you will need a lift out !

No way of getting up the Northampton Arm from the Nene to the GU as its narrowbeam (6'10) as per the Oxford.

Of course you could take the sea route..............................................................

These should cover the area you require (to the grand union anyway)-
