Had a great two out of the three summers we have had our 20, this year has been an obvious washout. Got a chance of taking a VR package with a decent early pension before next April so thinking if it comes off maybe going a little bigger with more creature comforts.

Love our 20 and have spent prob three fold what it's worth but more space, headroom and some form of heating would be good and tempt the wife to maybe wander a bit farther than what we use our current boat for which is mainly as a day boat. Did sleep on it for a weekend but it was so cold on board, the wife and her friend ended up in a Hotel nearby leaving us men to shiver it out, well the evenings drink rations made us forget the cold until about 6 in the morning !!

Prob going for something newish, what would anyone recommend, Viking ,Shetland ?. Have heard some of the later Vikings are made to a cheap budget, even the local guy who serviced my outboard said they are flimsy compared to the Normans. Don't fancy a narrowboat.

There are some nice boats that i like but 3ft draught and 5ltr engines would just be silly on the Avon...wouldn't it

Thanks for replies, might hold you to that Billy, the Black Prince does look a decent boat and would be nice to meet fellow boaters, won't be doing much until next spring now though.

Chap who moors next to me was hinting at a swop with cash his way but he has a think 25ft Springer narrowboat but have heard it's a colander underneath which he has cheaply patched up so will give that a miss.

Whilst passing i had a look at the below boat today, was hoping the draught wasn't that deep and could get a proper canopy made for it but it is that deep so that's a no go.

Hi Knighty,
I had a Norman 23 for several years and thoroughly enjoyed it. However realising some of the short comings of limited headroom and interior space I bought a Birchwood 25 which has full 6 ft head room and being a widebeam, 9ft.6", is spacious. St. Kitts is moored on the Avon and with an inboard engine copes well. The second hand prices are now quite reasonable.

Knighty, I've just bought a Shetland Black Prince with a 145hp petrol inboard but there is one on fleabay at the moment with a diesel. It has 5'11" standing height with a front v berth and a double dinette in the cabin. I did a 7 hour trip from Wyre Piddle to Evesham and back on Tuesday and spent the first half into a 18 mph head wind. I reckon I used less than 20 litres with plenty of power in reserve which kept me out of trouble. She has a draft of about 2"6" and is just light enough to be towed by my Shogun. You're welcome to come to Wyre and have a look. Other than that the Princess 25s seem to have a good reputation on the Avon

Regards Billy

The fuel etc i could live with but the Avon is either 3ft in flood or down to less than 3ft deep in some places especially where i moor.
Know someone in a local marina who has a Rinker and to keep it to anywhere near the 4-6 speed limit he is just on tickover.

I'm sold!
Headroom, heating, fridge, shower, and good bog, you'll love it but remember to factor in higher maintenence and mooring costs, you don't want something that eats away your payout too quickly, I know someone thats done that....
