Is there anything to do as regards the outboard during the winter,being new to boats i would rather ask a silly question than ruin an engine.

If you run the engine always let it get up to proper temperature before shutting off or you'll just fill the bores and oil up with water through condensation and cause corrosion problems, 10 minutes without any load probably isn't enough to get the oil hot.
Also an engine left idling for any period of time can cause the bores to glaze up leading to smoke and excess oil consumption, better to have it in gear with some load on.

I leave my outboard on the boat all winter. I try to run it for 10 minutes or so once a month if possible but last year when the the boat was iced in for ages it suffered no ill effects. I presume that as it has an open circuit cooling system (impeller sucks in river water, water cools engine and is spat out through the telltale) any small amounts of residual water eventually vent to atmosphere or at least have room to expand if freezing occurs? Obviously, if the boat/outboard is iced in don't try start it

Deano i'm not able to remove engine,being in a marina i hope i'm pretty secure,the owner said there had been no problems since it opened 5 years.
Peter good idea,being a biker i should have thought of that.
On a side note i saw a brand new widebeam getting craned into the marina today. |

If practical, take it off the boat and store it in the garage at home.
If nothing else, it will prevent it from being nicked!!

Others may have more suggestions, but I would certainly disconnect the fuel then run the carburettor dry, otherwise the leftover fuel will evaporate, leaving a residue that can block the carb.
