So chuffed I wanted to share this. I went to the farm this evening and carried out the first engine run on the boat after a 17 month refit. Finally it looks like I may have rebuilt a boat instead of an odd shaped expensive tupperware box. The engine started 3rd pull after being stood for 15 months following my purchase of it from Knighty. Runs quiet, engages gears smoothly, cooling water pumping is good restating warm engine effortless. Another 3 weeks of outside cleaning, polishing badge refitting and odds and ends should see it on the water.
Knighty I owe you a pint, many thans for selling me a good 'un.

Tell me the serial number and I'll find the year for you

Also give me the model and I might have gearbox data

Sounds like the clutch is slipping and the gear is not therefore locking in.

These are a dream to strip assuming I've understood you correctly?

Merc 20 about 1990 makes it a "blue-band"? You can remove the gear cluster and prop-shaft at the prop end by removing prop and retainer plate behind, reversing the spacer behind and use the prop to grab the cluster retainer nut and simply unscrew to remove the lot.

A lot easier than most other motors.

Natch remove lower unit off the leg first huh? Better held in a vice too.

I've got manuals on pdf and can burn you a disc, it's just under a gig. Cannot do it for a week or so as I'm off to Thailand with daughter to bring wife back but if you message me your address I'll see what I can do when I return.

As a first response either with the engine in a bucket, muffs on or moored up disconnect the cable/gear linkage at the engine end. run engine at tick over and manually move the engagement lever to reverse. Does it engage smoothly and when stay quiet when revs applied? Yes = cable adjustment/control lever. No = oh "Oh my word" its an engine problem!
Another check would be to have the engine switched off. Disconnect the cable at the enging lever. Engage reverse with the lever on the engine then go put the control lever in the cockpit in the reverse position. (this is easier to do than describe!)Look at the alignment of the cable end to the engine lever. Adjust as necessary to realign.

Well thats what I would do if it makes sense! Good luck.

Great minds.....New oil purchased this morning!

Glad it's running ok Ken, was a good outboard when i had it, only really changed it as wanted electric start.

Might be worth an oil change if it's been stood since you bought it.

All the best for your first outing which sounds like it's very soon

Nice one Ken.
And the really good news is that Summer has finally arrived, at least for a given value of "Summer"...
