Posted - 25 Jun 2012 : 21:25:49 In the years to come I hope to re-build much of the inside of my Norman 22 (it is the usual narrow beam version). One of the things we find most difficult with the present layout is the "cupboard" for the heads (toilet). At shoulder height I have just 19" width between the cabin roof on one side and the bulkhead on the other (i.e. the wall of the compartment). To put it bluntly, it is hard to swing your arm behind your torso to do the necessary wiping! So I have considered making a larger compartment when I re-build – for comfort I reckon we need about an extra 6" width making the internal dimension about 25".
However, a quick measure with the tape shows that there is only 66" between the two sides of the cabin roof at this height. Most cabin layouts that I have seen have a bunk/sofa along at least part of the opposite side from the heads. This means I have to fit in: 25" for the heads 1/2" minimum for the heads bulkhead ideally 24" for a passageway and a reasonable width for a sofa/bunk So far I am getting down to only about 20" for a passageway and about the same for the projection of the bunk.
Does anyone have a better layout that works?
Has anyone got the heads opposite something smaller than a bunk/sofa, perhaps just a locker or wardrobe, or maybe part of the galley?

Having been aboard yr boat on Sun & looking at yr plan , its pretty close to oem fitout (As you said you can see where the original wardrobe was. You do have those 2x massive water tanks too!
Been looking through our photo's as I'm sure we have met Kingfisher before , but cant find any at present. As I said may be worth a search on the Bridgewater Plate no to find history.
All the Best

Posted - 06 Jul 2012 : 12:37:24 Thanks again for all the suggestions. I thought I would put up here the sort of layout I have been thinking about for the future, to get people's comments. It is as many have said all a compromise!

Adi, I would be interested to see pic's of your boat's layout - I have sometimes wondered what a 22 used to look like. (Although I do have a 1970s (I think) N23 Brochure, it shows a Mk3 when the layout was quite different.)

Dan.

Posted - 27 Jun 2012 : 18:54:12 That looks very similar to the layout of my norman 25, I would guess the cabin is the same size as the 22 cabin, mine had double doors on the bog cupboard which made a usable sit-down shower room, we had a shower curtain shaped so it could be used with the doors open for a bit of extra elbow space.

Posted - 27 Jun 2012 : 17:56:23 Hi Peter,
I have a 1970 Norman 22mk1 with original interior, when I find the photos I will post them, I have the toilet just inside the cabin door on the port side and the original wardrobe forward on the starboard side.
Regards, Dan.

Posted - 26 Jun 2012 : 21:50:21 In our Norman 23 someone has put a double door on the karzie that open out to 90 degrees and there hinged to the outside edge of each is a further panel that opens and these latch together so you sit in the cubicle with your feet in the gang way but all is surrounded by modesty giving ply! |

Posted - 26 Jun 2012 : 17:41:36 It's always a problem. You don't want to sacrifice too much interior to enlarge the smallest room. I'm quite, ahem, wide and on our 23 I found it was a door open during use and a step halfway out to, um, finish off...
Maybe Deano has the best solution. Turn the compartment into a wardrobe and have a pull-out loo. You could always have a modesty curtain. |

Posted - 26 Jun 2012 : 09:15:26 You could move heads around so that main bulkhead is to your right when, ahem..sitting down, door open across to galley and cockpit doors closed. Then at least you'd have elbow room. Like this quick sketch:-

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

Posted - 25 Jun 2012 : 23:18:27 You could go for the yachie option of not having a toilet compartment at all. Open plan toilet under a bunk. What it lacks in privacy, it makes up in interior space!

Posted - 25 Jun 2012 : 22:28:28 Not sure Pete - Our 22 is original fitout (Heads next to front bunk)
I'm 6'6" & If I need to use it (Much to Chez's disgust) its ok with the door open
Can post pics if required (Of the fit out not the use !)
