Posted - 06 Jun 2012 : 17:31:55 Another outboard problem came up for me at the weekend - they seem to be a theme on the posts at the moment.
I had my engine serviced and backed out of the mooring for the first run expecting to deftly turn the wheel hard to - starport? - but it was stuck fast! so i went straight back towards the bank, stopped went forward but was drifting so would have hit the pontoon, managed to turn it a bit so then seeing i was near another pontoon and was getting a bit flustered abandoned ship and dragged it back (via the back of another boat) with the lines and the engine off.
It did free up a bit sufficent to use, but I am sure it used to be easier. Is there a friction bearing of some sort which needs easing off and should it be accessible from the boat (N20 - Mariner 15hp) or do i need the marina to do it for me?
Cheers

Posted - 16 Jun 2012 : 17:44:20 Quicksilver grease seems pretty good, usually smear it on anything that moves by the outboard and cables and the ratchet bit that is behind the Morse steering box (probably got a real name)

Posted - 16 Jun 2012 : 15:31:35 It will be a weight of the mind of those who have been fretting over it but i have fixed my steering. Turned out Adi was spot on and some oil (didn't have grease to hand) fixed it. Bit disappointed that was missed in the service.

Sounds like you need to apply some grease to the Telescopic arm that is at the end of the steering cable . We had exactly the same problem after a long lay up the other yr

Posted - 06 Jun 2012 : 18:58:40 Hi Clive On my mariner 15hp about 5 years old. The choke is enabled by pushing the key up and turning, just turning the key will start the engine without the choke. The engine will only turn over if the engine is in the water and in neutral Pete
