Hi all , i have a problem with my inboard volvo md7b and sail drive fitted from new in my norm 24.1982
Problem..... a loud screeching sound which is intermitent under load when cruising, there is no noise when moored up under load, tried the obvious alternator belt.raw water pump, engine runs perfect no smoke, tick over okay, and starts fine, Prop bearings okay no play .oil in the s/drive as clean as new. HELP

Do you have a high output alternator ?

Seen belts scream on these when it kicks in underway (not when moored)

What about the raw water pump (Presume you are raw water cooled ?) Maybe pump is running dry due to blocked inlet on Raw water filter (We experienced this with our old inboard - Even tho filter looked clear there was a mussel in the inlet pipe !) - Again this was only a prob when underway as it seemed to get enough suction when stationary - Usually you would see an increase in temp tho I guess.

Does it sound like belt screech or the more nasty metal on metal noise ?

Didn'read your post properly. It could be a bearing breaking down in the leg.

Does it have an anode behind the prop? Not familiar with the engine/drive setup myself.

not familiar with the engine but does it have a timing belt? or check the sealed system water pump.
