Hi All
Does anyone know anything about the River Kym? Has anyone been along it and how did they get on?

I've been up it once or twice in a Freeman 22. The overhanging willow trees are a bit of a pain, but there is not much to see once you are past the A1 bridge. Best done early in the season before the weed and the willows get going. Not really a pleasant cruise, more of a trip up the Amazon, cutting you way through the vines!! Worth doing to keep the rights of navigation, do document your cruise and post a report otherwise we will could loose the right to navigate. It is a jolly jaunt in a dinghy though!!! Just have to clear the prop occasionally.

Thanks for the replies - i will give it a go when the river is nice and high (seems to be at the moment?) as we have just moved to Crosshall Marina and the novelty of being on a different river for the first time ever will make me feel like Columbus!
PS Thanks for the work on the website, must be a lot of work.

You can get under the A1 no problem as long as the weed hasn't got going(in the water, not in your ciggy), theres fairly good depth till about 1/4 km from hail weston ford then it runs out of water, turning round is the issue as it's all narrow after hail weston springs(the place on the A1 with all the solar panels).
We went a fair way up in a norman 18.5 and did it till we went aground in the dinghy, turn the stereo up as you cross the golf course as it pi55es them off
The kym varies hugely with rainfall,not that it's an issue at the moment.

GOBA lists as following ;
The river Kym flows into the Great Ouse at OS Grid Ref TL181615 by Crosshall Marine and just south of St Neots lock. It is controlled by the EA as a main river for flood defence purposes but not maintained as a
statutory navigation.
It was included in GOBAs Navigating the Future study.
Although it is little known to many boaters this waterway is navigable for small cruisers for about 2 km. from the main river. At present, mooring is not allowed on either bank in the vicinity of the golf course.
In March 2006, an application was made to Huntingdon District Council by the riparian owners, St Neots Golf Club, for planning permission for a footbridge across the river a few hundred metres upstream of the Great Ouse confluence. At a height only two metres it would have spelt the end of navigation beyond that point.
GOBA was joined by Cambridge branch of the IWA and the British Canoe Union in opposing the grant of planning permission on the grounds that the bridge at its planned height would be an obstruction to an established navigation and on 3rd May, Hunts DC advised us that the application had been withdrawn.
Maybe the Ousy folk will be able to advise better - But seems less navigable than the Kyme !
