Hi,
Can anyone tell me how i can tell the age of my boat,the insurance have given me back to 1960,but i have no idea how to tell.
It has formed GRP seats in the cabin,but not in the rear area.
Hope someone has an idea.

My Norman 20 age was scribbled in thick pencil in the bow behind the glued down carpets. Mine was bought as a 1970 boat but after i read here that was where to look it identified mine as a 1979 build. |

Not later than 1975 is my guess because around then they made the starboard main bulkhead hinge at galley line, changed the hatch, and more importantly for your dating, stopped the ply locker construction in the cockpit and added a cockpit locker/floor moulding instead.
Another clue is the windscreen - somewhere around late 60's - I believe 1968-69, they discontinued the moulded GRP windscreen frame and used the aluminium-framed one.
Maybe those clues will help narrow it down for you. Another clue is in the toughened glass to the windows. Some glass used was toughened by Triplex who dated it by putting a dot on the etched symbol on the glass under the appropriate letter. The symbol was circular, the top half of the circle the word "Triplex", the bottom half the word "Toughened".
Vintage car buffs will be familiar with this. Count the letters in Toughened and include the space at the end - a dot under one letter gives the year in the decade. So a dot under "G" indicates a 4, guess the decade - likely to be 60 or 70 and you've got the year the glass was toughened. Close enough for a 40 year old boat for insurance purposes.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

My Norman 22 has numbers pressed into a piece of fibreglass, about 6" long, fixed inside the Port Bow - it looks as though it is bonded to the hull. My forecabin has no lining so you can see it although it has been pained over. In my case it says (from memory)
86922011
Which I read as August 1969, Norman 22, Boat number 11

my norman 20 has the numbers painted on on the port side of the bow, inside the cabin found them when i stripped the old vinyl padding out.
