Just dug out some old pictures of our honeymoon on the South Oxford in 1975 and a holiday on the Llangollen in 1976. The hire boats we had were a Norman 18/20 named Jane 3 and a Norman 32 named Lady Penelope. I'd love to know whether these were still in existence but under new names. Any information would be most welcome. |

1975 was a wonderful summer and our honeymoon was the week following our wedding on June 21st. We only had Jane for a week and from Braunston we got as far as Upper Heyford (which in those days had a large US Air Force base) before we had to turn around for the return journey. I remember that we went for lunch in a village pub there and consumed a Ploughmans, served with about a pound and a half of cheese, to a background of discussions in American accents about a new commander due on base. The US Air Force pulled out of upper Heyford in the eighties.
1976 was a very hot summer and water levels on the Llangollen were low. The boat in front of us from the aqueduct was crewed by a number of girls who seemed to get stuck at every bend so we probably used as much fuel standing still as moving forward. I'd love to think that our Lady Penelope is the same Norman as that featured on this website.
They were good times and those summers seemed to go on forever. The rot set in when I was informed, by someone totally lacking a soul, that the Tooth Fairy did not really exist. |

well bit the bullet on the engine type parson lost out
even for a tight scotsman, we have purchased a nice honda 15hp
remote control electric start four stroke of course
the queenbee liked the look of it so that was it he he!

This was our honeymoon on the Oxford Canal in 1975 and I recall that we picked up our boat (which I think is an 18 footer) at Braunston Ladyline perhaps?)

This was the following year and was the long, hot summer of 1976. We picked the boat up at the top of the locks above the junction with the Llangollen and the first afternoon we got all of two or three miles before we came to these locks which we padlocked because of water shortage - some things don't change much do they? I suspect she was pretty new in 1976 and the hire company had obviously purchased a job lot of fenders judging by her bows!
It would be wonderful to think that Lady P might be the same Norman 32 on this website so if the webmaster could make the current owners ware of these pictures that might elicit some details about her current condition.

Many thanks for the info - had assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the name would have been changed. If she is the same boat it's great that she is still around.
Our hire boat certainly had an outboard (I remember breaking the drive pin during an inappropriate reverse manoeuvre!) and, judging by my pictures, she would have been pretty new at the time (1976).

This may be the same with the '6' added for EA licence regs maybe ?
Believe this is the same 32 listed on this site as Lady Penelope - Motor size is the same...
