Have been given the chance to takeover a callumcraft 23ft project and would welcome any help and advice.Started today by stripping out alot of the wood and tiles and cupboards.The list starts now (1)where to get a s/h outboard engine (2)fixtures and fittings (3)safety certificate and insurance.......Pictures to follow soon |

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the rear end of the hull. The cavitation plate which is the horizontal plate above the prop needs to be within an inch or two around about the base of your hull.
That measurement is what outboards are normally measured on, around 15" is short, 20" long and 25 is extra long shaft.
Think you need a long shaft so have a measure. |

now heres a question for you ive been offered a suzuki 9.9 hp long shaft outboard engine with everything in but its come off a catameran so possible extra long been told its 33 inches from the bracket that connects to the transon to the proppellar at the bottom do you think this to long for the canals dont want it dredging the bottom of the canal please reply as im hopefully picking it up for a brill price on monday |

I think the best thing I did so far on my 23ft was to lower the floor to gain headroom, and to fit a solar power system to give me constant 240v. Pics are on my blog. Good luck with the project. It will be lots of fun.

P.S. just a thought, make sure you buy warm light LED's otherwise you end up feeling like you are sitting in a freezer instead of your new baby. |

I use led lighting in our boat and the battery will last forever. under cabinet led lighting from Ikea is very good as their £10 for 3 strips works from a 12v battery and uses only 1 watt and I have also used their down lighters and replaced the 20 watt halogen lamps with the 1 watt led equivalent from Amazon.

You are better of getting a proper leisure battery rather than a car battery. Leisure batteries i believe can take discharging better and store the power and release it over a longer time. A car battery is designed for a larger amount of power to start the engine then quickly recharging. A car battery will work ok but a leisure one will last longer do to taking the discharging/charging better. |

would also like some advice on powering electrical appliances should i get normal car battery for now until its all ready for more adventure filled weekends |

For inland usage 10-15hp is ideal, go 4 stroke not 2 stroke.

Thanks for the feedback we are already watching several caravans for interior on ebay but there seems to be a lack of 10hp outbourds is there any other sites which i can try.What would you all recommend as a min size as plenty 2.5,4 and 6hp about and a shed load of 55+ but dont want to empty the waterways on my first trip lol |

I am afraid the echo was caused by the deep hole I seem to have dug for myself.
but at least I now have another supplier to spend the wife's money with as I did not know about ASAP, they look very useful.
I must admit to using a portable gas cooker but we remove all gas canisters from HILO we are not on her.

I hear an echo ha ha.
You'll learn a lot of new skills like how to bond timber to a grp hull for instance.
Just don't use chipboard anywhere but always at least a Far Eastern wbp exterior plywood, hardwood if you can get it for trim and not softwood.
Unless you want to spend a lot of money an "original fit" gas cooker is still approved by BSS, so a crafty man might fit an old caravan cooker if it looks like it might have been the boat's original equipment. I didn't say that of course. You are allowed to re-fit original cookers into new cupboards hint hint. Most boats and caravans of the era used the same cookers.
NOT the old gas fridge though unless you have a diesel engine.
Ebay is brilliant for things you cannot get from Towsure (they do most things for caravans and some for boats) and ASAP Supplies are quite cheap. Mailspeed get a poor service write up I hear.
4-stroke outboards are expensive, look for Honda around 10hp minimum, and I think you'll want a long shaft on a Callumcraft as with Normans.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

as far as fixtures and fittings are concerned caravan interior parts seem to be identical and alot cheaper that boat fittings, Ebay is very good for boat stuff.
we went to our local marina for the Safety cert and they were very good, there are a few listed on this site and we got insurance from an add on this site as well.look forward to the pics and best of luck with your project. |
