My wife and I are planning a 10-dayer long the south Oxford next year (retracing our honeymoon trip) and would welcome some information as to the availability of petrol stations within, say, a quarter of a mile of the route.

Now you have her convinced of the joys of rivers remember the humber's quite a nice quiet little river as well, some of the other boaters are a little bit bigger though.
Probably not helping is it?

Thanks for your suggestions and those pictures have convinced the "Boss" that this is definitely worth a try. At the price of short term Thames licences, I suspect we may only do one day, possibly two.

If I remember , Abingdon is around a 4hr cruise from Isis (Thamesey folk may confirm) - That part of the cruise should convince yr missus that the non tidal thames is a puddycat - Try & go further theres lots to experience !!!
Sorry about the Sewer Tube - It was the only craft available as our 22 was out of the water !

"She who must be obeyed" quite likes the idea of tootling down to Abingdon where our nephew and his family live for a family day so your advice has been well heeded!
I think she may have remembered our youthful folly of many, many years ago when we set out from Paxos in a 8-footer with a tiny outboard intending to travel to Anti-Paxos. It didn't look so far in the "Junior World Atlas" but the Med is a very big place from a tiny boat. Lunatics!

Have to agree with Dave
The run up to oxford on the Cut is nowt special but the Thames is lovely!
If visiting Oxford , best choice is by river as there are virtually no visitor moorings around Isis Lock on the cut

Why no rivers? Most natural rivers are far nicer than the ditches and with far fewer locks, most are barely flowing and present no problems to any boat as long as you stay off the tidal sections.

Our honeymoon was down the South Oxford after picking up our little cruiser at Braunston, it may even have been a Norman - I'll need to look out the photos.
I like the idea of taking in some of the Thames but I'll keep mum on this at the moment as the wife has ruled "no rivers" - but it's hardly tidal where we would be going!

I'm not sure how many hrs you cruise but I suspect you will easily make Oxford in <5days (Dad did it to Isis in 7 days from Leics in a Sewer tube!)
If you do have a day or so to spare & I'm sure you will have , lock out of Isis or Dukes Cut onto the Thames Its faf far nicer that the Southern Oxford & Oxford is better by River (Take Dukes cut exit for Oxford by river)
I suspect you could easily come up to Reading & Back to Braunston - Well worth the extra few quid for a short term Thames licence.

have checked both systems for you, you only have petrol stations at banbury- bridge 163 and 168. thrupp- bridge 220. then oxford. you may need to fill tank then container too mate. if you need too know anything else Email me.

Probably around May time 2012. We are "homed" a days cruising from Braunston where we sill join the south Oxford. We plan on going out for a full 10 days and, if possible, travelling all the way to the junction with the Thames past Napton, Wormleighton, Cropredy, Banbury, Aynho, the Heyfors, Enslow, Kidlington ad on to Oxford. We have the capacity to start with around 7 gallons of juice so any suggestions as to petrol stations in easy reach of the canal on our route would be most welcome.

there are petrol stations at Abingdon, Benson, Reading, Caversham, after that i didn't look. do you take a laptop with you or a tomtom? if you take a laptop, get autoroute and i will send you the file for all the petrol stations in england. or there is a program called eureauweb water-way. this is satnav for boats, it incorporates the nicholson books, so everything is displayed for you as you go along, petrol stations, banks, food, water points and showers etc. it can be obtained from http://eureauweb.com/Water-Way/ Best thing i ever did was to get this.
