Posted - 16 Nov 2011 : 17:54:48 Its probably stuffed - However I have suffered a similar problem when the mounting bolt for the cable (teleflex) at the stern came loose & fell out - leading to you having to turn the wheel to full extent before it would turn the motor.

Posted - 16 Nov 2011 : 17:37:13 With 10" of free play I can only agree with the old git above, check ebay for a full kit as I've seen them on there quite cheap before.

Posted - 16 Nov 2011 : 17:28:21 It rather sounds as though your cable or rack is cream-crackered my friend.
I suggest you examine it most carefully and also check both ends to make sure the outer is properly anchored.
I would suspect a knackered outer cable. or the teeth on the rack might have worn away.
To be honest, it is probably best to throw the lot away and buy new - it is bound to be getting on for 40 years old now. That amount of slack indicates terminal failure.
