Ok so coming through rugeley today, I stopped got some petrol, went back started the boat set off e outboard seemed to jump slightly in the air no I've got no forwards or backwards, tilted the engine out with the engine running and the prop isn't turning, is there some sort of weak link in there incase of hitting submersed objects? If so how hard is it to replace ? Oh yeh to make it more interesting I think my tools are back in sunny Runcorn. |

Size wise on my 20 i have a Mariner 9.9 and that cruises happily at 4-6 mph according to my sat nav and flat out a mind blowing 11 mph was achieved  on a very slow moving River Avon. |

Sorry to hear that.I didn`t think it sounded right.
At least you are closer to knowing the score now.
Probably worth stripping down to have a look, but a 4 stroke would be better in the long run.
I would imagine the rescue chap knew his stuff but make sure nothing a little less drastic has worked loose say in the manual lever mechanism.
I find on my Honda a nut on the gear linkage tends to loosen off and this did cause me issues akk I do now is give it a tweak now and then.
It`s a bit large as a spare i`ve an Evinrude 4hp 2 stroke as the auxiliary and that`s fine on a Norman 23. |

If you are feeling bold, one option would be to buy a boat with an engine you want, swap the engines and sell the boat on. It's daft, but that would probably work out cheaper than just buying another engine. Of course, it's not without its inconveniences... |

Don't worry, I'm realising the needs new motor quite quickly. Was just pondering if a cheap repair is doable I have a for now / spare outboard. |

Don't spend much on it as you'll still have an obsolete 2 stroke motor that wants replacing, the original advice of look for a good 4 stroke is the best alternative, 10-15hp 4 stroke would do you fine and give you much better battery charging to cool the beer with.

They've lent me (for a charge) one to get Chester, steering is now uber light and there's much weaving across the canal, not helped by the lack of remote throttle this could be interesting.
Once I'm home I guess it phone around and find someone to look at the other one, see if they can do anything with it. |

Some dog clutches are, for want of a better word, "two -toothed" and what happens is the shoulders of the "teeth" get rounded off.
As a last resort you could whip them out, get them built back up and re-hardened or case hardened, and put them back in.
It might also be possible to just re-cut them to square shoulders again with a mini grinder.
No guarantees here - it really depends on just how they are made in the first place, whether the two profiles can be played with, but it might solve your problem for a while.

9hp depending on the river?? 4-stroke if you can afford it, 2-stroke if you must, but budget to replace in the next few seasons.

So the saga continues, came back down to the boat on monday, set off all fine and about an hour later no drive again, lifted the outboard and all seems fine, pin still in place etc, tried again nothing. So towed boat (well thats what tow paths are for aren't they) a mileish, well it meant I was near a pub, phoned river canal rescue folk and well waited, Tuesday morning a chap arrived says he thinks the dog clutch has gone, trundles off saying someone will be in touch, after several hours I got bored so phoned them no one wants to touch my old discontinued outboard, so they're sorting a loan one, might be weds morn, here we are late on Wednesday still waiting although I've been told he should be here within the hour.
So question time anyone know of a place that might look at an old Tomos outboard?
Worse case where's the best place to look for something secondhand?
How many HP do I really need to push a Norman 20 along canals and rivers?

Transom has not been cut down and the motor is correct for the boat.
Adi - thanks for the welcome back mate. Currently out of work, in middle of a long-winded divorce, courting a lovely girl again and pining badly for her. Can't get out again until end of Jan to see her but spending whole of Feb with her. Hopefully soon after that if I'm back at work she'll come over here and our dreams will be realised - of getting married.
Meanwhile boats laid up, one sold (a late model 20) at a silly price but at least it's gone and I've got a little more space around. Got
BSS on both a while back so if I want I can sell it as usable.

Aye, hopefully those Cheshire folk won't have dumped as much rubbish in the shroppie as has been going on through this stretch. Yes I have been leaving it moored for the odd few days, there's not much on in it at the moment so I just try and find somewhere that looks niceish preferably with another couple of boats around and well hope for the best. |
