Hi folks, so I wanderedout the othervday looking at boats and well somehow ended up putting a deposit on a Norman 20, hopefully I'll be picking it up in the next week or so and well then there will be lots of question.
So anyhow for now hi,
And doe anyone know about Tomis outboards ?

There`s a petrol statioh at Swarkestome near the bridce before the lock.
You can go from the lock down the lane at the side.
Theres a Morrisons the Alrewas side of Burton too just a walk through an industrial estate very close but hard to see from the canal.
If you Google petrol stations on Google maps it will bring up all the ones Adi mentioned.

Thank you, I did realise the leaving it chugging against the gate was probably not the best idea but all my boating has been in one of those, cheers for the advice and the petrol, station suggestions. I suspect I'll be taking it very easy for the first few days but hey it'll be an adventure. |

AAAAGGGHHHH !!!!  No No No - Its not a Sewer Tube !!!!
Seriously - You will be going uphill through the Widebeam locks - These will be the Hardest (Especially as most have bridges on the entrance , so you cant pull the boat in on a rope.)
Once you hit the narrow locks (Dallow lane , Burton) its not so bad.
I,ve single handed up there lots of times so my twopennorth .....
1) Secure boat on lock mooring & get lock ready - One gate is much easier if you have the confidence to get thru. If it looks ok (ie no potential thieves) I leave my Windlass topsides of the lock
2) Motor in steady - Stop boat with rear cockpit by the ladder.
3) Carefully climb ladder (With Centre Line in hand!)- This is one of your main dangers when alone as they can be slippy & the T&M Wide locks are deep!!!!
4) Tie boat to bollard
5) Shut bottom gate / gates
6) Open Ground paddle same side as boat - This will helpkeep boat against the wall.
7) Now I normally adjust rope , then crank a gate paddle , then go back to holding the rope - Dont be intimidated by others waiting to come down by rushing - If they want to help then fine but look after the boat!!!
8) Once lock is full open gate same side as boat , pull out on centre line thru gate & secure on lock mooring , drop paddles & close gate.
You will develop yr own skills / methods - I prob do it different than above , but that should get you going. Luckily Derwent Mouth & Shardlow locks are shallower so you will have chance to practice !!
Now - A note on Sewer Tubes !!!! If you share going uphill INSIST on the roping correctly as they will not be able to hold the boat without giving you a good squeeze (Never mind the idiots who say its ok on the motor or I have bowthrusters !) - A good tip if sharing uphill on a wide lock is hang at the back nr the bottom gates - Then if they lose control when the ground paddles are opened (They are fierce to Stenson) then when the bow swings over & hits the opposite wall you will be safe in the space at the back !
Also - Sewer tubes in first , Plastic out first !!
Good luck with yr trip - Remember yr fuel , an 18HP stroke may be a bit thirsty !! .
Fuel on route = Sawley Marina ,
Shell garage about 5-10 mins from Dallow Lane lock Towards the hospital (Dont leave boat unattended here)
Barton Turns (Along A38)
Alrewas (A long long walk on A38)
Rugely - Town Centre
Then depends which way you go !!!

Yes it's the good old winter stoppages, the good news is I got the the outboard going - 12v battery pack and a big screwdriver to short the terminals and hoorah life the bad news is people seem to want mr to work so looks like the journey may be lots of little legs over the next week but hey I'll get there.
Thanks for the nudge on a long centre rope, any tricks for single handing it - I've done 50ft things by leaving them chugging against the front gates on locks, same idea for this? Any tips gratefully accepted.

Stenson is only a few hrs from Sawley so thats ok.
You should do Shadehouse from Sawley easy in either 1 long day or 1.5 days, not looked but I presume these are up for winter stoppages ??
If heading for Chester I would personally take a left at Great Haywood & head down the Staffs & on to the Shroppie at Autherly.
Its a much nicer route & takes about the same time, if you are pushed thru Brum then its a much longer trip & the Staffs & Shroppie will be yr best route out of Brum.
Hopefully you got it running - If yr Single handing back , make sure you have a good long centre line - Those last Wide locks on the T&M are 11-12ft deep !

Hi folks, cheers for all the comments is a 18hp engine so perhaps slightly larger than necessary.
It is indeed Mandalay, although Ive got it cheaper already and if the engine problems arent sorted by Friday the deal is I pay less or walk away.
I had a quick look on canal plan, If I get through Stenson lock and shadehouse lock before the 7th then I reckon 3 daysish, if not then it's a bg detour via brum and closer to 5 or 6, the plan is to head to Chester over winter I have free moorings at a pub, then go to preston brook marina in the new year, maybe via the ship canal, weaver, boat Lift route.

Presume the boat is Mandalay advertised @ £1250
Even in todays market , IMHO a Norman 20 hull with a serviceable canopy (Which it looks like in the pic) £1250 is a steal !
If the motor turns out to be a kipper , I would offer a lower price rather than walk away.
Are you planning to move her to home ? Preston Brook is around a weeks cruise to most , but is achievable in less (We are insane & have done it in around 4 days !!)
Good luck on getting her started. If not a lower offer & a S/H 4 stroke might be just the job.
Plus if you move her back home , she'll be great on the River Weaver !!! (With the bonus of the Anderton Lift !)

What hp is the tomos motor? You want at least 10hp realy, I'm fairly sure all the tomos outboards are 2 stroke so you will be looking at replacing it sooner or later anyway as 4 strokes are much quieter/smoother/economical.

I'm based Preston brook way, although at the moment the boat is at Sawley, I've not seen it running yet, although I've paid a deposit it's stated if its notnrunning by next Friday I can walk away and get my money back, although that's not really what I want to do, I'm goingover on Sunday to have a look try to work out which the start wires are, then maybe just put them on a battery.

Not heard of the outboard make. Have you seen it running?
New outboards are scary money.
Also check the condition of the canopy. They are also daft money if you need to replace it.

Yeh I kind of realised that I've got a bit of an unknown on the outboard, ah well hopefully I can get it going this weekend - broken pull start and cables not all there for electric start.
Anyway I'm sure there will be lots of questions in the near future.

Hi, welcome aboard from a fellow 20 owner.
Don't know much about Tomos outboards,only thing i dug up was that they were made in what was formerly Yugoslavia and parts are a bit scarce.
