Hello All,Just finished our 3rd mini cruise. First was from Thurmaston on the river Soar to Sawley marina, 3 gentle days. Overnight at Zouch. The Rose and Crown is a great good value pub, stopped there on the way out & on the way back.
Second trip was to Foxton and up the staircase flight, what a great piece of engineering. The trip had its hassles, from base through Leicester had to remove plastic bags from the prop 4!!! times. Apart from that a pleasant journey to pub at *******. Following day through the tunnel at *****, first tunnel,quite interesting, at this point I wish I had checked the spot light, before entering the tunnel. Oh well, cabin lights on and a torch did a reasonable job. A nice gentle cruise to Foxton. Had a bit of a look around,great place. Had a chat with the lock keeper and decided to "do" the flight that evening. With great excitement I headed into first lock, so far so good, engaged reverse to stop and the engine cut out, restarted engaged reverse and the engine cut out. Flash of dejavu, something is around the prop. Tilted the engine(in the lock)with quite an audience by now, and sure enough about 3-4 mtrs of rope,along with thin fender from a narrow boat had decided to wrap itself around my prop. Trying to reach the prop whilst trapped in a lock is very difficult. we had a good try with a boat hook to no avail and finally decided to tow the boat through the the first half of the flight and managed to remove the rope at the halfway pound. Got to the top moored up and went to the pub!! Coming back down the following day was not without its little tribulations. Every thing was going great until the middle pound. Pulled out of the lock into the pound heading for the next lock in the flight,when, much to everyones amusement, as I aimed for the lower lower lock, nice and gentle like, the turbulence in the pound decided it would be moer entertaining to spin me around a couple of times much to the delight of the onlookers. Other than that a nice gentle run back to the pub.The following day uneventful trip to base.

Third trip bank holiday weekend.
We had intended to leave Friday, but it didn't stop raining, so we didn't go!!!
Thought we would go north and miss all the submerged plastic bags waiting to wrap themselves around my prop on the way through leicester. So off we go, we got through the first lock, 10mins away. Another ten mins,and guess what, a plastic bag around the prop,5 mins and a cut finger later and we were on our way again. Stopped overnight at the pub at Zouch. Have I said what a great pub this is? Ended up this time just beyond Shardlow. Nice relaxing, uneventful trip. Got home Monday evening after stopping at the pub in Zouch,by the way a great pub.
"thinks" this is really rambling, perhaps I should have posted this somewhere else.
The reason I started this was to ask about props. 3 blade or 4 blade.
The boat is a Norman 27ft with a Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke engine. Is there any advantage one over the other any comments,help, information etc will be appreciated.
I hope some folks get to this bit before they doze off with boredom. |

If I remember it right a four blader can give rise to a little more prop vibration due to one blade being shielded by the leg while the other is in clear water, (same problem as two blade prop)a three blader does not suffer as much from this. It will only be slight I would think. The four blader in theory will give a better grip on the water, better for manouvering, but its size and pitch would have to be matched to the engine power and speed, a good prop dealer should be able to advise on this, will also be dearer me thinks.
