Hi all, Iam new to boating and this forum, just in the stage of offering money on a norman 20, on first inspection bilge was full of water? I should have ran away then! but something about boat I liked.
So, second inspection £50 spent on hand held bilge pump 30 mins later bilge dry.Son standing on fore deck and am in side water dripping very fast from inner skin at the point it curves under fore deck.So am I correct in saying space between inner and outer skin is full of water? which I was tolled by owner.
Can this be fixed? the boat has had new cockpit screen fitted and a canopy is this a clue? will all hand rails etc have to be removed to find point of water getting in and the resealed. Or shall I run ? |

First rule of boating. Write down all the work you think needs doing and put an estimated cost to it all, then add 25% for the bits you will buy because they are shiny then double it all because thats at least what it will come out in the end.

The 20's are a double skin above gunwales as they had a seperate headlining moulding (unless it's since been removed) which is glassed to the superstructure just under the gunwales where your drip is coming from, sort windows and any vents/rails on the roof and the drip will disappear after a while.

Hi,Have a late 20,
first thing is that the 20,s are not a doubled skin boat, On mine I often get a drip from the windows, it is simply a case of removing the windows and re sealing them (if you can not live with it). But first thing is to check the rain water outlets on the outside of the alloy window frames, check that they are not blocked as this clears the water from the window chanels. Check the window seals, is there a black sealing rubber present? as these are often missing. If water is getting in, just un bolt and reseal anything in that area, or do one at a time until its solved. As long as the hull is ok every thing else is repairable, and to be honest in my opinion, most of the enjoyment of boating comes from the challenge of maintainence and repair. Are you sure where the water is comming from? the slidding hatch is well known for letting in large amounts of rain water. If it is the cuddy linning skin you are refering to, reseal everything ie windows and rails, drill drain holes in the lining, drain all the water off, then fill with marine filler, and paint, job done. remember water will not go upwards so try and find the highest wet point, if you can not, just reseal the windows, grab rails, and check the main slidding hatch. buy the boat and enjoy the challange of getting it back on the water.

But for about £600 more you could have Clives project which if you followed it's rebuild on another site you would see its worth it.
No relative of Clive and if I was looking for a boat now I would take up Cilves offer unless of course you want a project. But beware projects are time and money consuming.

Based on the info you have given that would appear to be a reasonable price. A new canopy can cost £600 by itself!
Some members have used RAC Windows (Plant division) for removing and resealing and had very good results at a very competitive price. |

I've got a late model 20 that doesn't leak.
Available with Merc 40hp electric start if required, plus I'll fit it.
Has a new galley cupboard, underslung stainless sink, pressurised water (cold only). Has 2 burner, grill and oven (not new). Table drops to make vee berths a double. New illuminated compass, new lined Royal blue velvet curtains, new removable helm/co-pilot seats that slide out so cockpit berths available with new Royal blue vinyl cushions at might. Hood in vgc. New battery in new box, re-wired with only stern light, side lights and 1 cockpit light re-used, all the rest new.
Has new water tank in bow with stainless deck filer outside on deck, new teak mast in stainless tabernacle (folds down) with all wiring inside mast, c/w new steaming and anchor lights.
Still got a little work to complete, few holes in cockpit coaming where fittings removed to fill/respray, carpet to toilet and needs a BSS although no problem with that. Has new heads and cabin doors, cabin/cockpit door is bi-fold. Helm re-built, original steering refitted but new upholstered helm console with new stainless switch panel with fuses for each illuminated switch.
Delivery included at agreed rates, uncluding launching if required.
If your interested - mail me. Price not yet finalised, but probably around the £2400 mark complete or around £2000 without engine.
Also got an Norman 18.5 pilot house, similar but a complete re-build, with ali roof over new white oak wheelhouse, all trim rubbers etc in white oak, also in 4-berth format with all new white vynil cushions throughout, table drops to make double berth, but no gas fitted, offered as fast fisherman or cruising boat. Has new galley in white 2-pack sprayed finish, with underslung stainless sink, flexi tank in bow but caravan type pump and tap. Oak mast, all new lights inside/out, resprayed inside/out in white 2-pack and finised with all new deck fitting. This boat has a tonnea type hood, brand new, as the wheelhouse roof forms much of the cockpit covered area.
New rubbers only to side windows. front and porthole windows new in new rubbers. Needs a damn good clean as dirty now. Needs BSS but never been in water since rebuild (the 20 blocked it in). Again - price for this - it is quite a unique boat - around £2200 which is not bad for a boat with NO old wood in it at all and all trimmed in white oak.
Couple of minor jobs to do but divorce is preoccupying me at present so I won't be doing them. Again, anyone interested - mail me. Delivery/launching included.

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

My 20 does seep very slightly from one sliding side window in heavy rain, doesn't bother me much as it catches in a moulded channel about 6" below the window. Found out not long after i bought the boat when Rosie and Jim got a bit soggy 
I just keep a cloth or sponge in that area if rain is forecast (like tomorrow  )
and move Rosie and Jim |

the boat has a johonson 2 stroke 20hp, new canopy new cockpit side windows, all cushions etc. the boat wants a good paint job. all windows out and reseal Am a windscreen glazer of 20 yrs so thats no problem. new bulk head and door new sink unit. which all of that no problem got 2 sons joiners. its just that water, the boat has been left for about 2 months so water has got and filled bilge,Ive pumped it out and it was fine but water is still in the double skin part and dripping. Hi all, its a norman 20 with moulded GRP flours and lockers the 2 front windows are about 6" above the front deck and water is dripping in at 2 points of the edge of ( inner skin )its a curved joint below windows on inside, so water getting in on outside of outer skin hand rail or windows or top of cabin roof and finding lowest point to leak in. The hull is not leaking, when it rains it starts dripping, and the boats going in a barn for 6 months for hull painting and all cabin area out side, so buy or run price £1450 offered thanks lezz. |

Is it a later Norman 20 with the moulded GRP floors ?
I had a Conquest for a Brief while , that was full of water (12") After pumping out it took a while for it all to drain out of the nooks etc before I could pump it again.
If the boats as full of water now as it was when you pumped it out then its leaking !

I guess it depends on a number of factors.....
1, How much is the boat?
2, How much time / money do you have to spend on doing it up?
3, Do you want a restoration project or to go boating?
