Hi there, does anyone have any suggestions as how to take up the slack movement , about 2-3" in the steering wheel before the gearleg starts to move. This has become more obvious since the engine and gear leg were removed to replace the transom. The steering linkage had to be disconnected at the gear leg although it was not removed. Any suggestion would be appreciated. |

Mine always feels much easier in the centre but theres little freeplay at all, remember the centre position of the helm gear will always wear most as thats where it spends most of it's time, try taking the cable out of the helm gear and putting it back in after turning the wheel 180 degrees so it's running on different teeth, if you have a technical steering cetreing system (bit of tape) it will need changing afterwards.
If it's an enfield leg the nylon plates inside and outside the ball joint can get pretty worn.

I have just checked today for any free play and there is none. I think the feeling of free play was due to when centering the wheel and the pressure was removed from the add on rudder, it felt like free play. I will take her on a longer cruise this week and double check. Many thanks for all of your advice. |

On my Teleflex the steering nut had come loose

Thank you for your reply, good food for thought. I suspect the problem lies at the gear leg end but further investigation is necessary. I cannot recall seeing any means of adjustment to take up free play but this will be looked at very shortly. Many thanks again. |

Something is loose, in fact very loose I'd say, as assuming it is a standard Teleflex Morse steering system they are pretty end-float free. They either work flawlessly or the cable breaks.
I suppose the woodruff key is still in the steering wheel boss?
Stretching it a bit, I suppose it is possible that some teeth are missing on the steering box cog - you could check that. If the wheel turns the spindle and not just the wheel yet the cable doesn't move then it's teeth slipping, worn or missing. If the cable moves and the wheel and spindle move together - it's the leg end.
You also need to be looking at how the leg end is anchored, the outer cable clamps and the ball joint to the steering arm and if the arm itself is loose on the leg.
If it is neither the box or wheel boss/key, and the leg end is all secure you might have a failed outer casing, plastic split and the steel outer rusted away.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |
