can anyone tell me if it is worth using ballast to trim my Norman 20 as the front seems low in the water. I have just got into this boaty lark and am learning as much as possable but this is somthing I cant find the answer to. |

hi chaps thanks for the advice,I have decided to go fo the best option and the beer is on order! the only problem is the refurb of the interior could take much longer than antisipated with moving all the ballast around from the rear lockers to the glass storage area to the belly of the cap'n, then waiting for the next load to be delivered.

My 20 is exactly the same, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how I was using her and have a small amo t of ballast in the bow and offset the pilot position with the water tank on th opposite side, leisure and start batteries are on either side as far back as possible.
When we are 5/6 on board there I usually only enough room for th girls to sit on the bow and the rest of us near the beer fridge at the back.
If it is full of ballast remove a little bit at a time as it may have been added to help with steering, which may or may not have worked.
My advice is to fill the back with as much beer as possible when it is in offer at the evil empire, ( 3 boxes for £20) and as it diminishes you can justify the purchase of more as it is required for ballast.

Normans do sit "down in the mouth" if they only have a small engine on the back and little else in the way of weight but adding batteries, gas bottles and so on does tend to trim them out a bit. On the ones I have fitted/refitted (3 so far of that particular model) I stick the water tank right up in the bow which adds a bit of weight (doesn't help the trim much at rest but gives it a bit of "grip" for steering.
I agree with Adi though - don't add ballast on such a small boat, use the gear and equipment to help trim it out.
Like Knighty says though, with all the gear aft plus crew they ride a bit more level. It's these silly little engines on the back that add no weight - Norman 20's were built for up to 100hp on the back - that trims them out nicely! Stick an inboard/stern drive in and you'll need trim tabs to push the bow down.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

My 20 sits low at the bow moored up but when you get a couple or so on board the rear deck she levels out fine. |

If the fronts low its probably already ballasted up front !
A 20 should sit bow high (Most forum posters know my view on ballast !)
Check out the bows for bags of sand !
