I'm bu**ered if I'm going to fly that red duster thing on "Glenmore" (Cromwell lives!) so need some ideas or suggestions what should adorn my refurbished flag pole?
Lets have no suggestions of skull and cross bones or that sort of touristy boater stuff! |

For boats in categorised waters, as defined in MSN 1827 are not required to wear the Red Ensign when in those waters. You can read MSN 1827 here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mcga07-home/shipsandcargoes/mcga-shipsregsandguidance/marinenotices/mcga-mnotice.htm?textobjid=AFB108F490AA4EB1. Scroll down to see a list of categorised waters. And so long as you remain in those waters, i.e. not going to sea and are a pleasure craft there is no requirement to wear the Red Ensign although you may do so if you wish.
You could also wear your wife's knickers if you wish come to that.
Be aware though that if you fly, for example, The Union flag, Welsh Dragon and the Crosses of St Andrew, St George and St Patrick these are primarily land flags and should not be flown at sea by cruising yachtsmen. At sea the cross of St George is the flag of an Admiral and it should therefore not be flown by anyone else, without special dispensation. A vessel flying the St Andrew s Cross could be thought to be declaring "my vessel is stopped and making no way through the water" as this is the meaning of code flag M which has the same design and the St Patrick s Cross could be understood as code flag V "I require assistance".
Go to sea and the rules change and then become a legal requirement, as do the regulations in SOLAS V, COLREGS, as vessels which go to sea must comply with the relevant merchant shipping regulations.

I thought this only applied to sea going boats or boats in a foreign land Peter? I understood that the inland waterways were not obliged to follow this rule? |

Maritime law states what you fly from the ensign staff on the stern and its the red duster Im afraid. Fly what you like from the cross trees or the pennant staff at the bow in G Britain

We sadly don't have one. There is a previous thread where there were a few "Burgee" type flags made but these were only try outs and never really took off. I'm still supposed to be looking if I have a couple of these!!! |

I'm thinking of making a flag for my 20 ... a white background with a green Horse Chestnut Leaf motif.
After all, William was a Norman ... and apparently he was a conkerer !
And yes ... I'm serious !
