Hi everyone, I have recently bought a plastic 6 gallon petrol tank for my Norman 20 (will need a mortgage to fill it) i want to fit a new outlet that screws in on a taper thread.I didn't want to screw it in dry as petrol has a way of finding a way out so i rang loctite who told me they didn't have any thread sealer which was ok, a bit hard to belive so i researched ptfe tape which had conflicting advise. Can any one advise me on any thread seal which will be ok. Many thanks Dave. |

Our Company uses it to seal hydraulic connections on sub-sea actuators, at 5000 psi, 3km water depth and guaranteed for 30 years so it has to work!

I have used a Loctite product for this - Loctite 577

Quite expensive, but fully compatible with hydrocarbons - see table on page 2.

Hi Clive, Thanks for the links.I have used hylomar in the past for gasket cement but never thought it would be ok for petrol pipes etc. will be getting a tube tomorrow. many thanks. Dave. |

hi Peter.did think about hylomar and ptfe but correct me if im wrong but both degrade in contact with petrol. im propably being a bit over cautious but i dont want any leaks sitting in the bilge. Dave. |

Sorry guys the fuel tank will pressurise if the engine is stopped and the vent closed due to evapouration of the fuel, this builds up to a few pounds per sq inch after a couple of hours on a warm day. If you want to interchange tanks use quick release couplings properly sealed using ptf tape or hylomar sealant on the threads.

Pretty sure on my last tank and new one supplied with my outboard they just screw in hand tight dry. As long as the thread is on top of the tank and you shouldn't brim the tank it shouldn't be a problem. The cap should have a breather hole or you slightly loosen the cap when running anyway.
If you did want to seal it cannot see ptfe being a problem as it's not as if it's under pressure at top of the tank.
This is all assuming the fitting you are on about is the one with a dip pipe to the bottom of the tank. |
