Posted - 29 May 2011 : 18:08:36 We have a problem with our engine. A rope wound round the engine and we had to remove it. The boat now doesn't go forward or back. We have checked the engine - it works and the pin is still in tact and so is the propeller. When we try and put it into gear it doesn't clunk into place like it usually does. THe engine is a honda 15 outboard. The gear moves but nothing happens to the boat. Someone mentioned that we might have sheared the teeth off or something??! Any suggestions and guidance welcome |

Posted - 29 May 2011 : 23:10:45 Thank you for your response. As we are not DIY boat people we have taken your advice and arranged for someone to come and look at the boat tomorrow to see if they can diagnose the problem for us.

Posted - 29 May 2011 : 18:47:04 Without looking at your engine it would be hard to be at all accurate but it is possible that the pin, if you actually have one, has sheared. My reasoning is that the "clunk" going in and out of gear is the engine taking up all the backlash in the drive train against a prop that is meeting water resistance. No clunk might indicate prop not attached to the shaft.
However, that assumes an old engine with a shear pin, modern engines have a metalastic centre boss to absorb shock, these can and do fail but generally there is at least some friction so a noisy response would still occur from gear changing.
"Shearing the teeth off" is very unlikely indeed, but shearing the prop shaft is possible, the shaft is "waisted" behind the water seal, and has another potentially weak point where the pin that locates the sliding dog passes through. I suppose this pin might have sheared if a rope pulled the prop and shaft violently forwards as the rope tightened and if that was the case the shifter dog clutch wouldn't have anything to engage with but to do that the entire bearing housing and retainer screws would have had to part company with the casing. That has got to be very extreme.
