We bought our Norman 20 moored on the Trent, which is a 100 mile round trip from us. However, we've just received confirmation that we now have a BW mooring on the Ashby canal which is virtually on our doorstep. Hurrah!
The 'downside' is that to get from one to the other is a 70 mile trip (Trent and Mersey/Coventry/Ashby) and involves 35 locks ... my wife can't get time off work ... and doing it on my own doesn't seem sensible.
Having it traillered seems the sensible option ... but can anyone give me a rough idea of what the cost may be as I have no experience of this. No, I don't have a trailer ... and if I did my 1962 Austin A40 Farina wouldn't cope !!!
There's a new slipway on the Ashby at Snarestone which the Ashby Canal Association charges £15 to use. |

Beeston Marina charged me £7.50 to use their slip ... and the Ashby Canal Association charge £15 for use of their new slip.
It's so new that I even had my pic taken in the boat for their next magazine as we were the first paying customer to use it !
More good news is that work on continuing the canal towards Measham begins again in about a months time.
The mooring at Sutton Cheney is great, with not only full BW facilities inc. showers but also an excellent licenced bistro.
Finally, just to reiterate ... I can't recommend Chris highly enough. |

If that £130 got it slipped at both ends you got a bargain, sounds like someone to add to the good links section.

I have to say that Chris proved to be ideal in every way !!!
Responded quickly to my message ... arrived when he said he would ... did a great job at both ends ... and even accepted a last minute change in plans without batting an eyelid ... and all for £130 !!!
He's a great chap who I would unhesitatingly recommend to anyone needing a boat moved.
Give a man a fish and he'll feed his family for a day. Teach a man to fish ... and he'll sit in a boat drinking beer all day. Hic! |

Hi Dogpaddle,
Have you managed to sort trailer transport for your boat yet?
If not i can highly recommend Chris at Topaz marine based at the Boat Station in Welford-on-Avon near Stratford. He has a Landrover V8 and trailer for every occasion. He is very reasonably priced and I saw him drop a boat off at my Marina last week with great care and pride in his work. WhenI was thinking of buying a boat I got a quote off him and he was asking about half what others were.

I was looking at having a Norman 20 transported from Leighton Buzzard to Reading and it would have been about £200. I also looked at Yorkshire to Reading and was £350ish. I thought that was reasonable considering the distance involved.

After having had no response from the couple of boat transport companies I have been put in contact with I'm sending out this appeal to anyone in the club in the Nottingham/Midlands area with a trailer and vehicle capable of taking my 20.
The online RAC route planner tells me it's 27 miles between slipways ... so no great distance.
I'd be happy to donate a reasonable number of folding beer tokens to a member who has the neccessary vehicle/trailer and could give me half a day of their time. |

About four years ago or even maybe more I paid £2 a mile to a fella who did a great job. Tony Tugboat also seems to have a good reputation among mmbers here. |
