Posted - 14 Aug 2010 : 15:26:13 Been doing a bit of fishing of the boat lately. Any advantage of getting a fish finder for rivers ? River Avon i'm on isn't that deep, poss 3 mtrs at deepest mainly 1-2 mtrs so would a fishinder with a depth sounder work or are they mainly for deep lake/sea fishing (will try anything to catch a bl*@dy fish ) |

I've got a Garmin Fishfinder 140 and it doesn't draw anything like that amount of power. I've no idea what the 500w actually means (guessing it's an instantaneous pulsed power or something). 500w at 12v would need 40+ amps - so it'd need power cables the size of an electric oven! I doubt it takes more than half an amp (could well be much less than that), I'll try and measure it for you if I get chance.
I can also vouch for it's accuracy in shallow water - I use it for picking my way up and down a shallow tidal river. I've navigated in a channel about 2ft deep when caught out by the tide, and the 140 worked admirably. The only problem I've had is the transducer mounting bolt (that holds it to the bracket) coming undone and getting lost. |

Posted - 07 Nov 2013 : 09:23:42 Deano did see you had that for sale but looks like it needs to go on a solid panel, need something that could fit on top of the cockpit dash (if that's the word )
Just that my kids are scratching their heads for a xmas present. |

Posted - 06 Nov 2013 : 22:36:06 That must be near the Anchor then, one of our day out/booze cruise stop offs
Did get annoyed with the knob er landlord there who wouldn't serve us food at 2.10pm because he said they stopped doing food at 2pm even after telling him we had travelled 2 hours to get to his pub which fell on deaf ears but still served folk who arrived in a boat after us who had reserved a table.
Will look out for you next season.

Posted - 30 Aug 2010 : 14:29:32 I also use a gharmin 140, great for depth tracking, and as i do a lot of pike fishing, works well to show where the bait fish are, and also shows depth of fish, worth a look. |

Posted - 29 Aug 2010 : 18:45:02 I fish mainly the Warwickshire Avon around Evesham. Not a great depth though but big Pike and Barbel into double figures around. Just thought one would add a bit of interest fishing of the boat occasionally. |

Posted - 15 Aug 2010 : 21:12:08 It's difficult to find one that will work well in very shallow waters. Make sure you get a 45 degree angle transducer at the very minimum. I think the Americans have ones that can look sideways as well, but you'll pay for that feature!!

Posted - 14 Aug 2010 : 20:39:28 Thanks, oh well just a thought We fish a nice notorious big chub and barbel area so will have to revert back to good old intuition (or pot luck ) 10lb plus barbel around and i catch fish smaller than the damn maggots !! |
